WELCOME TO
FRANKLIN COUNTY, OHIO

Chenoweth Cemetery
Mt. Pleasant

This cemetery is the oldest burying ground in Pleasant Township, the southwestern township in Franklin County located about a mile north of the village of Harrisburg, on the high land to the west of Darby Creek valley, and is about a mile north of the Pickaway county line.  The Gay Road is just north of it, but the cemetery may be more easily reached by following the lane from the Darby Creek Road (Harrisburg & Georgesville Road on the county road map) up to the old Chenoweth Homestead, and from there going north across the fields.  This old homestead is now the home of Emeritus Professor Samuel J. Kiel of Columbia University.
There are many unmarked graves here.

NOTE 1: Thomas Chenoweth, brother of the older Elijah, is buried just south of these graves, in a grave from which the original marker is long since gone.  But when Elijah Chenoweth 2nd put up the monument to his wife and parents he took the old stone from his father's grave and placed it at the grave of his uncle Thomas.  On May 9, 1945, this old stone, now fallen and broken, was uncovered and cleaned off and found to be still legible enough for positive identification.  This grave is a few feet south and east from the obelisk erected in 1875.  Thomas Chenoweth was born Sept. 10, 1753 and died Aug. 17, 1814, after which time his widow (Cassandra Foster0 and family moved farther west.
NOTE 2: Margaret Chenoweth was the daughter of Amos Heath; Joseph was the son of Elijah, Sr.)
NOTE 3: Elijah Chenoweth, Jr. was son of Joseph & Margaret Chenoweth.  One account says he was born 1824.)
NOTE 4: Mary Chenoweth was daughter of Thomas Tipton)
NOTE 5: Rebecca J. Chenoweth was first wife of William B. Chenoweth)
NOTE 6: Simon M. H. Cochrun was said to be the son of an older Simon Cochrun who came from Virginia and went on father northwest in Ohio, reported to be a Revolutionary Soldier)
NOTE 7: Sarah Deyo - It would appear that the mother was born Feb. 7, 1833, the child Sep. 21, 1846
NOTE 8: This stone is adjacent to similar stones of Hettie Knouff & Mary Hartle Stahl, q.v.)
NOTE 9: James Morse Sr. lived in Darby Township, Pickaway Co. and had a forge where he made plows.  Came from New England)
NOTE 10: Thos. Tipton & Elizabeth Tipton - "Sacred to the memory to our Father and Mother"  Elizabeth was a daughter of Jesse & Milcah Tomlinson of Chillicothe)
NOTE 11: Charles W. West, Joseph C. West & Mary N. West - These three were children of Charles West and his wife Rachel Chenoweth, d/o Joseph Chenoweth, granddaughter of Elijah Sen.  She died about 1897 and insisted almost with her last breath, on being buried in this old cemetery, in her home.  Her wishes were complied with, although it meant temporary interment in the yard of her home, and six weeks later removal to the cemetery.  Today her grave cannot be identified with any certainty.
NOTE 12:  (A child's grave, marked by a much weathered sandstone slab)
NOTE 13:  This is a badly weathered stone near the monument of Elijah Chenoweth.  It may mark the grave of William Manning who was a Revolutionary soldier and a pensioner; but only part of the name can be read with certainty)
