PETER ICKES,
farmer, Monroe Township, Carroll County, was born in Tuscarawas County,
Ohio, about the year 1830. His father, John Ickes, was born in
Bedford County, Penn., where he married Miss Elizabeth Stine, and is
an early day he came to Tuscarawas County, where he entered a tract of land,
on which he resided till his death, which occurred Aug. 6, 1851, when he was
sixty-four years old; his widow died in 1859. They were the parents of
eight children, viz.: Jonas (deceased), Benjamin (residing in
New Philadelphia, Ohio), Peter (our subject), John (residing
in Tuscarawas County), William (in Blackford County, Ind.),
Elizabeth (deceased), Esther (residing in Tuscarawas County,
Ohio), and Ann Wright (in Tuscarawas County).
Peter Ickes grew to manhood in Tuscarawas
County, Ohio, and there married Nancy Garrett, to which union were
born the following named children: James (who resides in Monroe
Township), John (at home), Levi (in Del Roy), Robert H.
(in Dell Roy), and Joseph M., Peter E., Clara D. and Margaret A.
(all four at home). Mr. Ickes, after his marriage, resided in
Tuscarawas County about two years, and then came to Monroe Township and
purchased the farm he now owns, containing eighty-nine acres on which he has
erected a fine residence and barn. His wife died Oct. 6, 1885, a
member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Politically Mr. Ickes
is Democratic.
