Major General (Ret) George W. McLaughlin
Maj. General George W. McLaughlin, age 78, of Sacramento,
California, died on Sept. 4, 1998, after a long illness. Born in Cadiz,
Ohio, Maj. General McLaughlin retired from the United States Air Force as
the Commander of the Air Logistics Center at McLellen Air Force Base. He
also retired from Sacramento County where he served as Airport Director.
Maj. General McLaughlin attended Ohio State
University and graduated from Miami University of Ohio, the Command and Staff
College, and the Air War College. He completed several graduate programs
at Harvard University's School of Business.
Maj. General McLaughlin began his career in the
Air Force in 1941 as a P-47 fighter pilot in England, France and Belgium in
World War II. He flew close air support during the invasion of Normandy
and for the 3rd Army offensive in France. After the war, he served as a
flight instructor. His other assignments included Commander of the 50th
Tactical Fighter Wing at Hahn Air Force Base in Germany; Deputy Chief of Staff
for the 17th Air Force at Ramstein Air Base in Germany, Commander of the 3rd
Tactical Fighter Wing at Bien Hoa Air Base in Vietnam; Director of the 7th Air
Force Tactical Air Control Center in South Vietnam; Assistant Deputy and Deputy
Chief of Staff at Headquarters Tactical Air Command at Langley Air Force Bas in
Virginia. He served three tours at the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia.
During his career, he flew numerous high performance jets including the SR-71
spy plane and held a Command Pilot Rating.
Maj. General McLaughlin's decorations include
the Distinguished Service Metal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit with one Oak Leaf
Cluster, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, French Croix
de Guerre, Belgium Fourragere, and Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal First Class.
Maj. General McLaughlin was a member of the
Arcade Baptist Church in Sacramento and the Sacramento Rotary Club.
Maj. General McLaughlin is survived by his wife,
June (Bohandy) and his daughter Judy, both of Sacramento, his son,
David (Joan) of Fredericksburg, VA; his sister, Sarah Haverfield
of Columbus, Ohio; and his grandson, Jared of Charlotte, N.C. He
was preceded in death by his parents

A military ceremony with full honors will be held in
Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia on Nov. 13, 1998. |
