WAYNE'S CAMPAIGN -
The sixty years' war with the Ohio Indians
was now drawing to a close. Congress had been awakened to a
sense of the situation by the defeats of Harmar and St. Clair.
General Anthony Wayne was sent across the mountains with an
army like himself. His mission was to subdue the Indians and
extend the domain of the United States to the boundaries defined by
the treaty with England. He took ever step with care,
fortified posts of advantage, advanced further and further into the
Indian country, and on the morning of August 20, 1794, he found the
Indian army and forced the fighting. By nightfall the victory
of Fallen Timbers had been won, and ten power of the Ohio Indians
broken forever. Peace was secured and the border warfare was
virtually over.
