FIRST OHIO VOLUNTEER INFANTRY.

THREE MONTHS SERVICE
This Regiment was organized at Columbus, Ohio, April
18, 1861, in response to the call of the President dated April 15,
1861, for volunteers to serve "three months." It was composed
of companies from different parts of the state as follows:
Company A (Lancaster Guards), Lancaster, Ohio; Company B (Lafayette
Guards), Company C (Dayton Light Guards, and Company D (Montgomery
Guards), Dayton, Ohio; Companies E (Cleveland Grays) and F.
(Hibernian Guards), Cleveland, Ohio; Company G (Portsmouth Guards),
Portsmouth, Ohio; Company H (Zanesville Guards), Zanesville, Ohio;
Company I (Mansfield Guards), Mansfield, Ohio, and Company K
(Jackson Guards), Hamilton, Ohio. Most of which were prominent
militia organizations of the State. The Regiment was ordered
to Washington D. C., at once and left Columbus on the morning of
Apr. 19, 1861. It was mustered into service Apr. 29, 1861, at
Lancaster, Pa., and on its arrival at Washington early in May was
assigned to General Schenck's Brigade of General
Tyler's Division. It was actively engaged in the battle
of Vienna, V., June 17, 1861, with a loss of nine killed and two
wounded, and in the battle of Bull Run, Va., July 21, 1861, with a
loss of three killed, two wounded and two missing. The
Regiment was mustered out on expiration of term of service from
August 1, to 16, 1861. The official list of battles in which
this Regiment bore an honorable part has not yet been published by
the War Department, but the following has been compiled during the
preparation of this work:
