JOSEPH ZEGER,
farmer; P. O., Shauck’s; is at present building a house on the
plat of ground upon which he was born, Sept. 29, 1846; he is the
third of a family of ten children; his father’s name was
Jacob, who was a native of Franklin Co., Pa., where his
wife, Elizabeth Ritter, was born; in 1841 they moved to
this county, fixing their place of abode in this township, and
bought eighty acres of land for $375,00 [sic], and paid
the tax on same, which cost them, in all, $380,00 [sic];
here they made their home until their death; his death occurred
May 2, 1872, hers in Jan., 1865; at the age of 15, Joseph
enlisted in the 136th Reg., O. V. I., Co. I, and upon his return
home worked two years at the house-carpenter’s trade; he
subsequently made two trips to Missouri -- the first time
remaining there six months, and the second time sixteen months;
but the country not suiting him as well as the “Buckeye State,”
he returned to remain for life in Congress Tp.; in Sept., 1871,
he was joined in wedlock to Elizabeth Emig, who was born
in November, 1848, the daughter of Charles and Margaret
(Miller) Emig; they have one child -- Loreno,
who was born Oct. 8, 1876; Mr. Zeger located on the place
he now owns, during the Centennial year; he is a Republican, and
a member of the Grange at Johnsville. Mrs. Zeger is a
member of the United Brethren denomination.
