HON.
WILLIAM VAN METER was born in Belmont County in 1819.
He learned the trade of a carpenter, a vocation he followed
for a livelihood until his removal to Mount Ephraim in 1834.
From Mount Ephraim he came to Sarahsville, which was
afterward his home. For many years he was engaged in
merchandising in different parts of the county. He
identified himself with the best interests of Sarahsville,
and filled many positions of trust and responsibility.
He filled the office of county treasurer for two terms.
In 1874 he was elected to the representative branch of the
legislature. He served on the State Board of
Equalization. In 1850 he was married to Miss Sarah
A. Stewart who was born in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1823,
and came to this county with her parents in 1831. Six
children were born to them: Maggie (Danford), John
W., Herman W., McClellan, Leah (Johnson), and
Hamilton W. Mr. VanMeter was a Democrat in
political belief, and in every way a worthy citizen.
