JOHN HALDERMAN,
now residing in Eaton, came to Preble (then Montgomery)
county with his parents from Virginia in 1806. The family
settled in Lanier township, in section thirty-two, and a sketch
of their settlement may be found in the history of that
township. Mr. Halderman was born in Virginia in
1805, and consequently was only about one year old when his
parents removed to this county, which was then inhabited
principally by Indians and wild animals. He married, in
1829, Jemima, daughter of Jacob Shidler, who
settled about fourteen miles north of Eaton about the same time
as the Haldermans. Mrs. Halderman was born
in 1811, and is the only survivor of twelve children. Of
ten children born to Mr. and Mrs. Halderman only three
are living, viz.: Furguson, in Wabash county, Indiana;
Mrs. Emanuel Lick, in Fayette county, Indiana; and Mrs.
Dayton Kelley, on the old farm in this township.

HIRAM HECATHORN was born in
1842, in Montgomery county, and settled in Harrison township,
section ten, in 1855. He married Lavina Hunt, born
in 1844, and has five children: Seymour, Elmer, Annie Mary,
Luther and Malinda. Mr. Hecathorn farms
one of the best and largest farms in the township. He owns
one hundred and sixty acres, and rents an additional one hundred
and sixty acres. He has always been identified with any
improvements in the township, such as churches, schools, roads,
etc.

EPHRAIM D. HEETER was born
in Montgomery county, Ohio in 1847, and in 1861 he came to
Preble county with his father, Jacob, and settled in Twin
township. In 1869 he married Eleanor Hapner, born
in Twin in 1852. Two children have been born them.
Mr. Heeter commenced the dry goods and general
merchadising business in Lewisburgh in 1878, where he still
resides.

JOSEPH M. HENDRIX was born
in Pennsylvania in 1816. From this State he came to Ohio
in 1842, and settled on a quarter section of section ten, in
Gratis township. He and his wife, Agnes (McDonald),
made the journey in a wagon the year after their marriage.
His father was a wealthy farmer in Pennsylvania, owning a farm
of three hundred acres. He had seven children, all of whom
are dead excepting John M. and Joseph.
John M. married Rebecca, daughter of John Murry,
of Carrol county, Maryland. He has had nine children.
His farm contains four hundred and forty acres of fine land,
which is under good cultivation.

JOSEPH HOFFMAN was born in
Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, in 1780. He emigrated to
Ohio from Maryland in 1838, and settled in section twenty-seven,
of Harrison township. He was a minister of the United
Brethren for fifty-two years, both in this county and Baltimore,
Maryland. His wife, Susannah Limbert, was born in
Pennsylvania in 1781, and died in Euphemia in 1847. They
have five children still living, viz: Eli, born in
1806, married and living in Harrison township; Henry,
born in 1813, lives in Dayton, Ohio; Joseph, born in
1813, lives in Champaign county, Ohio; Kemler, born in
1826, lives in Harrison township; Susannah, born in 1815,
married John Stife and lives in Dayton. Eli
Hoffman was married in 1829
to Elizabeth Waymire and has four children now
living. He was for twenty-eight years a minister of the
United Brethren and a member of the Miami conference.

VINCENT C. HOMAN is a native
of Preble County, Ohio. His parents, Benjamin and Rachel
(Curtis) Homan, were natives of Pennsylvania and New Jersey
respectively. The former, Benjamin Homan, was a son of
Eber and
Jane (McPurdy) Homan, who were natives of New York and Ireland,
and were born as follows: The former at Long Island City, New
York, September 7, 1764, the latter in Ireland, May 25,1775.
They were married in Pennsylvania and settled in Fayette County,
where the mother died April 14, 1810. He subsequently married
again and moved to the State of Ohio, where he died March 25,
1840. They were the parents of seven children, viz: David, born
September 26, 1802; James: born October, 1803; Phebe, born
November 7, 1804; Eder, born March 16, 1806; Jane, born June 7,
1807; Keder, born May 29, 1809, and Benjamin, the father of our
subject, the eldest member of the family, born in Fayette
County, Pennsylvania, August 13, 1801. He and Rachel Curtis were
married in Warren County, Ohio, March 27, 1823. She was born in
New Jersey, July 14, 1802. After Mr. Benjamin and
Rachel Homan's
marriage, they first settled in Warren County, Ohio, and
subsequently moved to Clinton County, Ohio, and from thence to
Preble County, Ohio, where he still resides. His wife died July
15, 1844, and he subsequently married Margaret Grissom. He is
the father of seven children, viz: William, born February 13,
1824, and died July 3, 1832; Ezra, born October 24, 1827, and
died July 9, 1832; Sarah J., born October 3, 1832; Vincent C.,
born October 18, 1837, and Mary E., born May 16, 1841, by the
first wife, Rachel; and Benjamin F., born September 17, 1847,
and Nancy K., born August 5, 1849, by his last wife, Margaret.
Vincent C., our subject, was educated in Preble County, Ohio,
was raised on a farm until his twenty-first year, after which he
clerked in a grocery at Eaton, Ohio, for a short time, and in
August, 1859, he, in partnership with his father, purchased a
stock of groceries at that place and engaged in business until
March, 1865, at which time he sold out and came to Mexico,
Indiana, and in April of that year, purchased a half interest in
a stock of general merchandise at Mexico, Indiana, with James L.
Wilson, with whom he carried on business until September, 1882,
at which time they traded their stock of goods for a tract of
land in Pulaski County, Indiana, consisting of 662 acres, of
which Mr. Homan owns a half interest. He also owns 150 acres of
fine land in Jefferson Township, Miami County, which he
purchased in 1884. He also owns stock in the Mexico
Manufacturing Company, and a fine residence in Mexico, where he
resides. He was married at Mexico, Indiana, October 27, 1863, to
Sarah J., daughter of James and Sarah (Ault) Wilson. She was
born in Preble County, Ohio, July 1, 1840. Mr. Homan is an
intelligent and enterprising man, and is highly esteemed by all
who know him. He is a member of the Masonic order, and he and
his wife are members of the M. E. Church. Transcribed from:

BERZILLA HORNER, born in
1826, married Elizabeth Kinsey, by whom he had five
children: Hannah Ann., Mary Elizabeth, Maria Frances,
Elenora and Emma. Mr. Horner owns a farm of
about eighty-seven acres.

JONATHAN HORNER was born in
New Jersey about 1798, from which State he moved to Ohio, and
settled in Butler county in 1807. His death occurred in
Gratis township in 1852. He married Hannah Antrim,
by whom he had four children, namely Rachel (deceased),
Sarah, Berziller and Elizabeth (deceased).

ANDREW HOUSE, whose father
lived in Monroe township, was born in Monroe township in 1843.
In 1872 he married
Clarabel Phares, who was born in Montgomery county in
1853. Two children have been born them, only one of whom,
Nellie M., is now living. Mr.
House began business in Lewisburg in 1874, keeping
groceries, hardware, queensware, etc. He has been
councilman of Lewisburgh for one term. He served during
the Rebellion in the hundred days' service, in company T, of the
One Hundred and Fifty-second Ohio national guard. He was
at one time on transport duty, taking provisions to General
Hunter at Lynchburg, Virginia.

ARMSTEAD
HUFFMAN was one of the early settlers of Gasper township,
and a prominent, useful man. He was born in Virginia in
1788, and was an early emigrant to Kentucky, from Byron county,
from which State, he came to Preble county after marrying
Nancy Burton. He located on the farm in Gasper, now
owned by Porter Webb, when all around was still forest
and game plenty. He died in 1859, surviving his wife a
quarter of a century. Their children were Ambrose,
Thomas M., Sally (Mattox), Overton, Morgan,
Nathan, Nancy (White), Mary (Tepshens), Alzina (Campbell),
and James. Of these, Ambrose, Sally, Overton,
Mary, and James are deceased. Morgan and
Nancy reside in Eaton, Nathan in Dixon township,
Alzina in Gasper township, and Thomas M., the
oldest of the family, living in Camden. He was born in
1808, and was consequently seven years of age when his parents
settled in Gasper, and saw much of the manners of pioneer life.
He resided upon the old home farm until 1866, when he removed to
his present residence. Mr. Huffman was married in
1831 to Annie Conger, who died in 1877. J. A.
Huffman, a prominent citizen of Camden, was their only son,
and was born in 1835.

JAMES HUNT was born in Montgomery county, Ohio, in
1817. In 1854 he moved to section three, of Harrison
township. Mrs. Hunt, formerly E. Seybold,
was born in Warren county in 1822. They had ten children,
nine of whom are still living: Catharine, wife of
Jesse Studebaker; Lavina, wife of
Hiram Hecathorn, lives in
Harrison township; George W., married, lives in
Baltimore; Joseph, married, lives in Darke county;
Aaron lives at home; Jane, wife of Edward Bowline,
lives in Darke county; Mary, wife of Frank Pease,
lives in Darke County; Lizzie, single, lives at home;
Margaret, wife of Aaron Heller, lives in Darke
county. Mr. Hunt is one of the most prominent and
wealthy citizens in the township. He owns about three
hundred and thirty acres, and his residence and buildings are
the handsomest of their kind in that neighborhood.
