S. J.
NORTON, merchant, Radcliff, Ohio, was
born in Livingston County, N. Y., Nov. 21, 1820.
He left his native town when five years old and
came to Portage County, Ohio, where he lived
till he was eighteen years of age. In 1839
he came to Vinton County, Ohio, where he has
lived the most of the time since. He was
married at McArthur, Aug. 3, 1841, to
Catherine Cottrell, born in Virginia,
Dec. 9, 1824. They were blessed with seven
children — Mary, Alice, Cyrus, Catherine,
Florence, Del, Elias. His wife died in
February, 1878, and he was again married in
February, 1879, to Ann Markon, who
has borne him two children—Perry and
Seth. Mr. Norton
commenced his present mercantile business in
Radcliff in September, 1881. He was
appointed Postmaster in October, 1881, and is
still acting Postmaster at Radcliff. He
has been a member of the order of Freemasons
since 1850 and belongs to the chapter.
