Dated: Jan. 15, 1855
OBITUARY.
The Hon. WM. RUFUS PUTMAN,
of Marietta, Ohio, died on the 1st instant, aged 83 years. He
was the son of GEO. RUFUS PUTNAM, who made the first
permanent white settlement northwest of the Ohio in 1788. The
deceased settled in Marietta in 1799, and resided there ever since.
In 1801 he was chosen one of the representatives from Washington
county to the Territorial Legislature. The county then
embraced nearly one-fourth of the present State of Ohio. He
was an honest useful man, and enjoyed the respect of all who knew
him. |

Dated: Aug. 4, 1869
A few days ago, near Marietta, the
horses attached to a wagon, in which were nine persons, ran off,
overthrew the wagon, killing Roger Foley and wounding Mrs.
Hart and Mrs. Lenox so badly that their recovery is
doubtful. |

Date: Jul. 31, 1896The Oldest White Woman, Born in Ohio,
Died at Marietta Yesterday, Melissa Sprague, 90
Special to the Register.
Melissa Sprague died today at
Lowell, ten miles up the Muskingum, and was buried today. She
was ninety-two years old and is believed to be the oldest (white woman
born in Ohio. Her parents, Stephen G. Smith and
Matilda Stone, were married in Fattner's Castle, in 1794.
Mrs. Sprague was a close observer of the exciting events of the
war of 1812, and many times recounted experiences of these stirring
times.
