NEWSPAPER EXCERPTS
Source: New Orleans Daily Creole Dated: July 26, 1856 Republicans Coming Over To The National Party - The Pioneer, says the Louisville Journal, a Black Republican paper in Wyandot county, Ohio, which supported Chase for Governor last fall, is out in a strong article against the election of Fremont. It declares its preference for Fillmore. The Banner, another Fusion paper at West Liberty, Logan county, Ohio, also refuses to support Fremont and goes in for Fillmore. The Philadelphia Times which strongly urged the nomination of McLean by the Republicans, has abandoned the Freesoil movement and zealously supports Mr. Fillmore. Speaking of the prospects of the Republican party it says:` Under the present state of affairs we can see no ray of hope for the friends of the Republican nominee. There is not a single bright spot in their whole political horizon. |
