CASPER M. ZERKEL, farmer; P. O. St. Paris;
was born in Shenandoah Co., Va., May 27, 1838; he is a son of
Michael and Susannah (Pence) Zerkel, both natives of the
above named State and county. C. M. was left
motherless at the age of 6 months, and his only brother died in
youth. His father afterward married for his second wife,
Elizabeth Pence. Casper M. was raised by his
grandfather, Lewis Zerkel with whom he lived till nearly
21 years of age, when he came to his present residence, and
lived with his father, who died in 1870. He, being the
only child, now owns the farm of 214 acres, except the widow's
dower. In 1863, June 25, he was united in marriage with
Mary Angeline Kesler. She was born in Clark County,
July 20, 1845. To this union three children have been
given - Sarah C., born Aug. 18, 1866 Lewis I.,
born Mar. 13, 1869; and John F., born Jan. 12,
1879. Mr. and Mrs. Zerkel are members of the German
Reformed Church.
