William Givens
is dead as a result of injuries suffered at 4:30
o'clock Wednesday afternoon in the Pennsylvania
railroad yards near the "Jungles." Attempting to
board a yard engine he fell under the wheels,
his right leg being so badly mangled it had to
be amputated. Givens
died a 11 p. m. Death was the result as much of
a lowered physical condition, it is believed, as
it was from the shock of the injury and
operation following. When brought to the
hospital the man's physical and mental condition
gave evidence of a considerable degree of
intoxication. There seems to be more or less
good reason to believe that his condition was
the result of too great an indulgence in that
quality of illicit liquor that those frequenting
the "Jungles" are accustomed to imbibe. Certain
symptoms manifested in his physical condition
indicated, it is alleged, that he may have
imbibed a concoction having wood alcohol as a
constituent part.
