JURY INDICTS SIX PEOPLE.
Three Charged With Shooting With Intent to Kill During Hanging
Rock Trouble.
SPECIAL TO THE PLAIN DEALER.
IRONTON, O., June 14. - The special grand jury which
was called a week ago Monday to investigate the rioting at
Hanging Rock the evening of May 30 and which was dismissed last
Thursday because, as alleged, certain witnesses had skipped to
Kentucky to avoid being summoned before the jury, reported
today, returning six indictments. Three of these
indictments were against Hanging Rock strikers for shooting with
intent to kill. The names of those indicted are withheld,
because they are not yet in custody.
The jury also expressed its view of the conditions
which resulted in the trouble in the following language: "We
have investigated as fully as possible the recent shooting at
Hanging Rock and we have no hesitation in saying that the mayor
and marshal of that village utterly failed to do their duty at
the outset and during the trouble. We believe that in that
village on June 1, and prior thereto fully warranted the sheriff
in calling on the governor for troops, and we commend both the
sheriff and the troops in suppressing the lawlessness then
existing in the village of Hanging Rock."
James BULLER, the young man arrested on a charge
of shooting Supt. JEFFRIES of the Hanging Rock Iron
Co., and who has been in jail since his arrest, was not indicted
by the grand jury. |
