Washington Twp. -
ABRAM MANN
– a farmer; born in Malaga township, June 26, 1817; son of Peter and Elizabeth (Barnhard) Mann.  Married in this county, Dec. 30, 1841, to Julia A. Leck, who was born in Maryland, Aug. 14, 1823, daughter of Elisha and Margaret (Garwood) Leck.  Children:  Henry, born Mar. 21, 1844, deceased; Clarkson, May 8, 1845; Clarissa J., Oct. 10, 1847, resides in Woodsfield; Thomas F., Feb. 21, 1850; Oliver P., Sept. 21, 1852, died Nov. 6, 1856; Harriet E., died Dec. 2, 1856; Vachael H., Sep. 9, 1858; Makel M., May 4, 1861; Ross L., Jan. 15, 1865.  Mr. Mann has served as trustee and treasurer of the township, each three terms.  Postoffice, Graysville.

Malaga Twp. -
BARNETT MANN - is a son of David Mann and Margaret Griffin, who came to Monroe county in 1816, and are now both deceased.  Mr. Mann was born in Bedford county, Pennsylvania, in 1807; settled in Monroe county in 1816, and is engaged in farming and stock-raising.  He was married Mar. 6, 1834, to Mary Read.  She was born in North Surrey, England, Feb. 17, 1813, her parents being John Read, who died Jan. 15, 1847, and Mary (Andrews) Read, who died May 6, 1856.  They came to Monroe county in 1834.  The children of Barnett and Mary Mann are:  Elizabeth, born Nov. 22, 1834, died Dec. 11, 1851; John R., May 24, 1837, and living at home; David, Mar. 30, 1840 died Mar. 24, 1864; Wilson, May 10, 1842, lives at home; Henry A., July 9, 1844, lives at home; Ann M., Aug. 19, 1846, died June 25, 1847; Elman, July 6, 1848, died Nov. 17, 1850; Oliver, Dec. 5, 1850, died Oct. 24, 1857; Harriet, May 24, 1853, died Aug. 6, 1871; Austin, Dec. 4, 1855, lives at home.  David Mann, son of Barnett Mann, enlisted in the 116th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in 1861, and died in hospital in the spring of 1864.  Mr. Barnett Mann was commissioner of Monroe county from 1860 to 1867, and has been trustee of Malaga, Summit and Centre townships, in all for about fifteen years.  Mr. Mann was one of the earliest settlers of Malaga township.  when he first came here his nearest neighbors were about six or seven miles away, except two or three families.  At that time there were a great many deer, wolves, wildcats, etc., in the country.  Mr. Mann is engaged in farming, and is the owner of 500 acres of land, situated in Malaga township.  Address, Malaga, Monroe county, Ohio.

Malaga Twp. -
JAMES P. MANN – is a son of Hughes Mann and Margaret (Craig) Mann, who came to this county in 1817.  He was born in Malaga township, Mar. 28, 1839.  He was married in Quaker City, Guernsey county, Jan. 4, 1866, to Amanda Jane Moore, who was born in the town of Malaga, May 25, 1844.  Her parents were Elijah Moore and Rebecca (Fowler) Moore.  The children of James and Amanda Mann are: William Forest, born Jan. 14, 1867, lives at home; Nellie Moore, Nov. 11, 1870, lives at home; Frank Carroll, Nov. 6, 1874.  Mr. Mann was first lieutenant of Company C, 116th Ohio Volunteer Infantry; enlisted on the 8th day of August, 1862.  He served eleven months, and was then promoted to the position of captain of the same company.  Mr. Mann’s occupation is farming in Malaga township.  Address, Malaga, Monroe county, Ohio.

Greene Twp. -
JOHN P. MARTIN - was born in Belmont county, Feb. 18, 1851, and settled in this county in 1869.  His father Solomon B. Martin, died in 1863; his mother, Delilah Piles, lives in Middleburg, Noble county.  His wife, Susan Hagerman, daughter of Peter and Lavina (Carmichael) Hagerman, was born in this county, Feb. 16, 1847.  They were married in Stafford, Nov. 24, 1870.  Children: William G., born Nov. 5, 1871, died Sep. 16, 1879; Eury H., Mar. 3, 1873, died Apr. 3, 1873; Emma O., Feb. 6, 1874; Martha F., Nov. 2, 1876, died Feb. 28, 1877; John N., June 28, 1878.  Mr. Martin's wife's great-grandfather was in the war of 1812, and her brother, James C. Hagerman, in the war of 1861.  Mr. Martin is doing a good business in manufacturing wagons of all kinds, shoeing, repairing and all kinds of work in his line.  Address, Stafford, Monroe county.

Bethel Twp. -
THOMAS MARTIN - is a son of Robert Martin and Elizabeth Wilger, who came to this county in 1819.  He was born in Bethel township, Feb. 7, 1824.  He was married in the same township, Monroe county, Jan. 21, 1844, to Abigal Waller, who was born in Monroe county, Dec. 15, 1819.  Her parents were John Waller and Sarah Green.  They died in Monroe county.  The children of Thomas Martin and wife are:  Sarah S., born May 28, 1850, residence in Bethel township; Robert A., Apr. 27, 1855, lives at home; Mary E., Sep. 18, 1857, lives in Monroe county; George W., Apr. 8, 1860, married Mary Wickbaugher Apr. 4, 1882.  They reside in Bethel township.  Martin had a brother, Henry, in the army, who died at Chattanooga.  He has been justice of the peace about eighteen yeas; has been clerk of the township for several years.  Mr. Martin's father was one of the hunters and pioneers of Monroe county, and has endured all the privations and hardships incident to a new country.  In the hunting adventures of himself and others they killed many bears and wolves.  His father killed the largest bear ever killed in this country; the tree, at the roots of which the bear lay, stood until a few yeas ago, when it fell.  Truly it may be said that these noble pioneers are gone, but their good works which they have accomplished to do follow them.  Mr. Martin's father was born July 4, 1796, in Greene county, Pennsy7lvania; died in Monroe county, July 30, 1874.  His mother was born Jan. 5, 1806, in West Virginia; died in Monroe county, Ohio, Sept. 17, 1854.  His father was by birth of Irish descent; his mother of English.  Her mother was of Irish descent.  His father was a member of the Presbyterian Church and his mother also.  Both are firm believers of Scripture.  Mr. Martin has a farm of 240 acres of land.  He settled on it when in the woods, and has cleared about 160 acres of it.  Occupation, farming.  Address, Mars, Monroe county, Ohio.

Bethel Twp. -
WILLIAM MARTIN - was born at Clearport, Monroe county, Ohio, Dec. 10, 1827, being the son of Robert Martin and Elizabeth Wilson.  Both died in this county.  Mr. Martin was married in Franklin township, July 22, 1851, to Sarah Waller who was born in Monroe county, Mar. 28, 1829.  Her parents were John Waller and Sarah Green.  They are both dead.  The result of this union was: Westerman T., born Oct. 26, 1853, a resident of Bethel township; Mary E., Nov. 2, 1855; Walter R., Nov. 8, 18654.  The younger three of the children live at home.  Mr. Martin had one brother, Henry T., in the war of 1861, who died since the close of the war in Columbus, Ohio.  Mr. Martin, the subject of this sketch, has a farm of 250 acres of land, about 160 of which is cleared, and he experienced a great deal of a pioneer' life in Monroe county.  When he first came there he moved right into the woods.  He lives on Indian creek.  His occupation is farming.  Address, Mars, Monroe county, Ohio.

Centre Twp. -
HENRY RUSSELL MASON -  was born in Woodsfield, July 21, 1834, on the lot on which he is now located.  He is the oldest living native of Woodsfield, with one exception.  His first wife was Mary W., daughter of Alexander and Mary (Amos) Franklin, residing near Summerfield, Noble county, Ohio.  Their marriage took place Oct. 25, 1855.  The following are their children: Belle V., born Nov. 19, 1856; Olive C., July 17, 1859; Mary W., Nov. 19, 1862.  Mrs. Mason died Dec. 3, 1862.  His second wife was Catherine, daughter of Simon and Ellen (McCannon) Door.  She was born in Monroe county, June 9, 1839.  The date of their marriage in 1866.  They have two children: Leslie Vanlieu, born 1867, and Laura, in 1872.  Mr. and Mason's parents, Henry and Deborah (Vanlieu) Mason, settled in this county in 1818.  Mr. Mason was mayor of Woodsfield from 1876 to 1878, and town marshal from 1879 to 1882.  His trade is butchering.  Address, Woodsfield, Monroe county, Ohio.

Salem Twp. -
HENRY MAURY - is a son of Jacob and Mary Maury, who came into this county in 1859.  He was born in Belmont county, July 10, 1846.  Mr. Maury is a teacher and farmer.  He was elected assessor of Salem township in 1870, and reelected in 1871.  He was elected representative of Monroe county in the Ohio legislature in 1877 for two years, and reelected to the same office in 1881 for another term.  Address, Clarington, Monroe county, Ohio.

Centre Twp. -
JOHN McARDLE - was in the mercantile business in Woodsfield.  He was born in Wigtonshire, Scotland, Dec. 15, 1834; he died very suddenly of heart disease, Dec. 8, 1872.  His parents, Henry and Ann (Ross) McArdle, are both deceased.  Agnes Moore, daughter of James and Elizabeth (Ross) Moore, was married to John McArdle at Woodsfield, Feb. 25, 1867.  She is the mother of three children: Elizabeth M., born May 30, 1869; Mary Ann, May 30, 1869; Agnes V., July 31, 1872.  Mrs. McArdle's father died in November, 1857.  Her mother is living at the age of 82.  Mrs. Moore settled here in 1865.  William McArdle, a brother of John, was in the war of 1861, in a Pennsylvania regiment; he was captured, and died in Andersonville prison.  Mrs. McArdle's brother, John Moore, was prominently identified with the educational interests of this county for ten years, being principal of the high school; he was a graduate of Glasgow (Scotland) College.  He died Oct. 31, 1867, respected by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance.  Mrs. McArdle was born in Wigtonshire, Scotland, May 30, 1837.  Her postoffice address is Woodsfield, Monroe county, Ohio.

Benton Twp. -
JAMES McCASLIN - is a native of Belmont county, Ohio, having been born Sept. 18, 1831; settled in Monroe county in the spring of 1833.  His parents were Thomas McCaslin, who was born in 1804, and died in 1879, and Elizabell Fulton, born in 1798 and died in 1877.  They came into this county in 1833.  Mr. McCaslin's wife was Mary E. Miller, who was born in Pennsylvania, Nov. 14, 1838.  Her parents were Samuel Miller, born Dec. 21, 1812, and died in 1873, and Abigail Miller, born Dec. 19, 1814, died in 1871.  The children of Mr. and Mrs. Caslin are: Andrew T., born Jan. 18, 1859; James G., June 14, 1861; Joseph I., Mar. 29, 1864; William F., Oct. 16, 1866, died Feb. 6, 1870; John M., Apr. 27, 1868, died June 28, 18__; Anna B., Jan. 15, 1871; Ella M., Dec. 15, 1874; Mary M., Dec. 13, 1877; Edgar F., Sept. 7, 1880.  Mr. McCaslin has been trustee of Benton township for three different terms.  Occupation, farmer.  Address, Jolly, Monroe county, Ohio.

Seneca Twp. -
THOMAS A. McCOY - Was born in Alleghany county, Pennsylvania, Sept. 8, 1838, and settled in Monroe county in 1870.   His parents, John McCoy, who died Oct. 20, 1878, and Mary (Scott) McCoy, never lived in this county.  Mr. McCoy was married in Washington county, "Apr. 10, 1870, by John T. Hill, esquire.  His wife was Nancy Carpenter, born in Monroe county, Jan. 24, 1850.  She is the daughter of Joseph Carpenter, who was born in this county, and died Nov. 29, 1874, and Martha McMurray, who died Apr. 13, 1875.  Their child, Ruth, was born Feb. 2, 1880.  Mr. McCoy was a member of Company B, 148th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.  He enlisted at Marietta, May 2, 1864, served until the following September, and was discharged at the expiration of his time, Sept. 19, 1864.  He was employed in the State service two years prior to his enlistment in 1864, and participated in the capture of Morgan on his famous raid through Ohio.  Mr. McCoy's parents were among the first settlers of Washington county, Ohio.  Mrs. McCoy's grandfather, Joseph Carpenter, and his brother, Robert, came to this county when Ohio was yet a territory, when the country was full of wild animals and still wilder Indians.  At that time there were not probably over three families in the township.  Joseph Carpenter, senior,  was a soldier of the war of 1812, and Joseph Carpenter, junior, father of Mrs. McCoy, was his third son.  Mr. McCoy is trustee of Seneca township, and is engaged in wagon-building and coopering at Calais village, Monroe county, Ohio.

Sunsbury Twp. -
ALLEN McELROY - is a son of John McElroy and Elizabeth Gray, who came into the county in 1830.  He was born in Pennsylvania, September, 1810, and came to this county in 1830, with his parents.  He was married in Sunsbury township, Mar. 30, 1832, to Elizabeth Wright, who was born in Pennsylvania, June, 1811.  Her father was Samuel Wright, who came to this county in 1816.  The children of Mr. and Mrs. McElroy are: William, lives in Kansas; Margaret A. (Mellott), lives in Adams township, Monroe county; Alfred, now dead; Mary E. (Mellott), lives in Sunsbury township; Hiram Y., dead; Albert, dead; Elizabeth, lives in Sunsbury township; Newton, dead; Isaac, Sunsbury township.  Hiram McElroy belonged to the 4th Virginia Infantry; went out in 1862.  He died in Grafton, West Virginia.  Albert was in the same regiment, and went out in 1862.  He took sick while in the army, came home and died.  Mr. Allen McElroy was trustee of Sunsbury township for two terms.  He is now a resident of Sunsbury township and engaged in farming.  Address, Beallsville, Monroe county, Ohio.

Salem Twp. -
CHARLES McGONIGAL - is a farmer of Salem township; was born in Tyrone county, Ireland, in May, 1816, and settled in Monroe county in 1850.  He is a son of Joseph McGonigal, who died May 2, 1871, and Isabella McFarland, who died July 7, 1863.  His father came from Ireland, and located near West Liberty, West Virginia, and engaged in the manufacture of woolen goods, which he followed until his sixtieth year, when he retired from business on account of poor health.  He then removed to Monroe county to the residence of his son Charles, where he spent the remainder of his days in quiet, and died at the age of 85 years, respected by all.  Mr. Charles McGonigal's great-grandfather, McGonigal, was a soldier in the Revolutionary war all through, serving under General Washington.  His brother-in-law, James Steward, served through the late war, a captain in the 76th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and was with Sherman on his famous "march to the sea."  Mr. McGonigal has held the office of assessor for five years in this township, and was one of the judges of stock at the first county fair held in the county.  He is one of the enterprising citizens of the county, lending his influence to educational matters, and to everything to the advancement of the interests of the county.  Address, Clarington.

Greene Twp. -
GEORGE McKELVEY - is one of the prominent farmers and stock-raisers of Greene township, being a son of Robert McKelvey, now deceased, and Nancy Boyd.  Mr. McKelvey was born in Tyrone county, Ireland, in the year 1815, and came to Monroe county in the year 1845.  His wife was Mahala Coleman, a native of Belmont county, where she was born, Aug. 24, 1827.  They were married in Belmont county, Nov. 11, 1854, by Rev. Samuel Wallace.  Mrs. McKelvey's father was Samuel Stonebraker, now deceased.  The children of George McKelvey and wife are: George C., and Martha E.  Mr. McKelvey's son-in-law, Lewis Sykes, was in the late war, having been a member of the 77th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.  He served five years; was taken prisoner and held several months, and was honorably discharged at the close of the war.  Mr. McKelvey came from Tyrone county, Ireland, and settled in Belmont county about the year 1835.  He were married his first wife.  Belmont county was at that time very new.  He remained there about six years after he was married, and then came to Greene township, Monroe county, and located in the eastern part of the township.  Mr. McKelvey was among the hardy pioneers that came into the woods in Monroe county, and helped make what it is to-day.  He is living at the age of sixty-seven years of the farm he cleared up.  Mr. McKelvey's first wife was Eliza Fulton, daughter of George Fulton and Belle McClarn.  They were married in Belmont county, Apr. 11, 1838.  Born by this marriage: Margaret and David, both resident in Greene township; Mary A. (Walton), a resident of Washington county; Nancy (Imes), a resident of Ritchie county, West Virginia; Belle (Sykes), living in Monroe county, Ohio; Emily Holmes, resident in Tyler county, West Virginia; William F., in Monroe county, Ohio; Violet C. (Ayers), deceased.  Mr. McKelvey's postoffice address is Round Bottom, Monroe county, Ohio.

Salem Twp. -
JAMES W. McKIMMIE - a druggist of Clarington, Monroe County, Ohio, son of G. W. and Ann (Ferrell) McKimmie, was born in Marshall county, West Virginia, Mar. 3, 1851.  His mother died in 1852.  His father remarried in 1853, and he lived with his father until he became of age, and received a common school education, after which he attended the State Normal School at West Liberty, West Virginia, in 1872-3, to fit himself to teach.  He taught a term of five months in 1874, and became dissatisfied.  He then served as an apprentice with John R. Davis, a druggist of Moundsville, West Virginia, up to Aug. 15, 1877.  After leaving Mr. Davis, he located in Clarington, Monroe county, Ohio, where he has since been engaged in the drug business.  He was married in Clarington, Jan. 16, 1878, by Rev. Mr. Grimes, to Alice L., daughter of John and Catherine E. Messerly  His wife was born Aug. 10, 1856.  Their two children are: James Edgar, born Nov. 7, 1879, and Anna E., Feb. 25, 1881.  Mr. McKimmie was elected justice of the peace of Salem township in Oct., 1881, and now holds that position.  His father located in Marshall county, West Virginia, in 1847, and has since been engaged in the practice of medicine, and has been very successful both in his practice and in his financial affairs.  He is still a resident of Marshall county, West Virginia, where his whole professional life has been spent, and is one of the prominent citizens of his county.  He was born in Loudoun county, Virginia, Nov. 15, 1815.

Sunsbury Twp. -
MR. McMEEK - was born in Monroe county, Ohio, May 16, 1854, and was married in Sunsbury township, Aug. 18, 1873, to Sarah Berry, who was born in Monroe county, July 30, 1856.  Mr. McMeek is a son of Henry McMeek is a daughter of John Berry and Joannah Hobbs.  Mr. McMeek is engaged in farming in Sunsbury township.  Address, Beallsville, Monroe county, Ohio.

Sunsbury Twp. -
JOHN S. MELLOTT - was born in Sunsbury township, Apr. 1, 1840, being the son of Noah Mellott and Susannah Seigler, who are both dead.  Mr. Mellott was married in Monroe county, Ohio, Dec. 26, 1865, to Jemima Mobley, who was born in Belmont county, Ohio, Mar. 28, 1844.  Her parents are Nathan Mobley and Susannah Ward.  They moved to Monroe county from Maryland.  The children of Mr. and Mrs. Mellott are:  Emma I., born Oct. 7, 1866; Amanada M., Dec. 26, 1868; Anna M., Jan. 18, 1872; Michael S., Dec. 23, 1874; Loah A., June 15, 1878 - all of the children live in Sunsbury township.  Mr. Mellott was engaged in the war of 1861, in Company D, 7th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry.  He went into service in the fall of 1861, and was mustered out in 1864, serving as a private in the ranks.  He was in the battles of Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and was with Grant in the Wilderness and at Spottsylvania Court-house.  He was wounded at Gettysburg, July 3, 1863, on the right side of the lower jaw.  The second wound was received in the fight on the Rapidan river, Feb. 16, 1864, in the right leg; it was a flesh wound.  The third wound was received at Hatche's Run, Oct. 28, 1864; he was wounded between the spine and the right hip.  Mr. Mellott was assessor for two terms, the first in 1870.  Mr. Mellott is a resident of Sunsbury townsh8ip, being engaged in the occupation of farming.  Address, Beallsville, Monroe county, Ohio.

Salem Twp. -
CHARLES M. MESSERLY - whose parents, John and Catherine E. (Legar) Messerly, came into this county in 1852.  He was born at Syracuse, New York, Sept. 21, 1848, was married at Beallsville, Ohio, Dec. 14, 1873, to Desda M. Steward born in Sunsbury township, this county, Feb. 29, 1853, daughter of Noah and Anna (Armstrong) Steward.  Children: George A., born Oct. 13, 1874; Mina A., born Nov. 3, 1876; Edward E., Jan. 14, 1879; Ada V. born Dec. 19, 1881.  Mr. Messerly carried on the business of a merchant tailor in Clarington for about ten years, and then, April 1, 1882, moved to Sistersville, where he still conducts the same business.  Three of Mrs. M.'s brothers, George, Thomas and Joseph Steward, served in the late war.  Address, Sistersville, West Virginia.

Salem Twp. -
WILL W. MESSERLY - is a son of Abram Messerly and Catharine Van Dusen, who came into this county in 1852.  He was born in Herkimer, New York, May 15, 1849; married in Moore township, Alleghany county, Pennsylvania, Oct. 23, 1873, to Martha J. Sterling, who was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Mar. 8, 1847.  She was daughter of James Sterling, who died in 1860, and Margaret Clark. W. S. MILLER - is a son of John Miller and Mary Williams.  He was born in Belmont county, Ohio, July 1, 1831; came to this county in 1835.  He was married in Wayne township, Belmont county, Ohio, Dec. 16, 1852, to Mary King, who was born in Belmont county, Sept. 19, 1835.  Her parents were Phillip W., born Oct. 25, 1853, lives in Bellaire; Loretta C., Nov. 6, 1854, deceased; Alonzo P., May 1, 1856, deceased; Sarah L. (Mellotte), May 14, 1858, lives in Lebanon, Missouri; Mattie B., Mar. 20, 1860, lives at home; John C., Apr. 29, 1862, lives at home; Margaret J., Feb. 11, 1869; Charles H., June 23, 1870; Mary A., Mar. 14, 1872; James B., June 3, 1875; Cyrus B., Feb. 7, 1878.  John Miller, the father of W. M. Miller, was one of the old settlers, and was very industrious and frugal; was a great worker.  He is said to have worked one year, and lost only one half day, which was caused by being a judge of election.  He contributed one thousand dollars for the construction of the Bellaire and Southwestern Railroad.  He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Beallsville; also, his wife and family.  W. M. Miller was raised on the first farm cleared in Sunsbury township.  He was a great grain-raiser.  With the help of his sons he was enabled to accumulate what would be considered in those times a fortune.  Mr. Miller's occupation is that of a farmer, in Sunsbury township.  Address, Beallsville, Monroe county, Ohio.

JACOB MILLER - is a resident of Sunsbury township, and is engaged in 1822.  His parents were John Miller and Mary E. Echerote, both of whom came into this county in 1835.  Mr. Jacob Miller was married in Monroe county, Jan. 1, 1856, to Hannah Beardmore, who was born in Monroe county, Oct. 9, 1831.  Her parents were Isaac Beardmore and Susanah Carl, both of whom came to this county in 1820.  The children of Jacob and Hannah Beardmore were:  Mary A., born Jan. 12, 18__, died in 1861; Lara J., Jan. 24, 1860, died May 15, 1861; Emmett M., May 31, 1862, lives in Sunsbury township Martha E., Nov. 25, 1864, died Sept. 14, 1865; Ophelia, Aug. 29, 1866, lives in Sunsbury township; Francis Marion, Oct. 31, 1868, lives in Sunsbury township; John B., Jan. 24, 1870; Clara O., Nov. 18, 1876.  Mr. Miller's address is Beallsville, Monroe county, Ohio.

Centre Twp. -
JOHN MOORE - parents came from Ireland to Centre township, this county, in 1832, when it was all a wilderness.  His father, William Moore, took out letters-patent for his land.  He assisted in building the first school house in Summit township, and helped organize the first Presbyterian church in the county, known as the Buchanan church.  He was also instrumental in pushing forward the public schools, building highways, etc.  He is still a resident of the county, aged eighty-four years.  John's mother, Elizabeth (McKeown) Moore, died in 1874.  Mr. Moore was married to Margaret T. Smith in this township, Sept. 1, 1870.  She is a native of Centre township, born May 1, 1850, while he was born in Summit township, June 5, 1833.  Their children are: (1) Robert S., Sept. 17, 1871; (2) Mary May, May 16, 1873; (3) William C., Dec. 25, 1874; (4) Sarah Trissilla, April 16, 1876; (6) Bessie J., Sept. 17, 1878; (6) Kate Pearl, Mar. 16, 1881.  Mr. Mason has held the office of trustee for three years in Centre township.  Joseph Smith, a brother of Mrs. Moore, was in the war of 1861, enlisting at Woodsfield in the 116th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, serving till honorably discharged at the close of the war.  Mrs. Moore's parents are John and Mahala (Greene) Smith, both deceased, the former in August, 1881, the latter in 1852.  Mr. Moore is a farmer.  Address, Woodsfield, Monroe County, Ohio.

Malaga Twp. -
MATTHEW MOORE - is a farmer and stock-raiser, and owns 325 acres of land in sections 27 and 28, Malaga, and 21 Sunsbury townships.  He was born near Louisville, June 1, 1839, and is the son of William and Elizabeth A. (McKeown) Moore.  They were settlers of Monroe county, September 1, 1832.  The latter died Dec. 25, 1872.  William still lives in Malaga township..  Mr. Moore's wife is Sarah Jane, daughter of John H. and Mary (McBroom) Dickey.  The former died Jan. 18, 1878.  Mrs. Dickey is living at her old home in Marshall county, West Virginia.  Mrs. Moore was born near Cameron, Marhall county, West Virginia, Mar. 5, 1845.  Matthew and Sarah J. were married at the residence of Captain J. H. Dickey, Mar. 14, 1867.  The children by this union are: William E., born Apr. 12, 1868; John H., June 3, 1870; George T., Dec. 12, 1872; Mary L. Jan. 5, 1875; James W. A., Feb. 17, 1878.  All reside at home.  Mr. Moore may rightfully be addressed at Ozark, Monroe county, Ohio.

JACOB R. MORE - is a son of Henry More and Jane Micham.  Mr. More came to Monroe county in 1857; was born in Belmont county, Apr. 9, 1829.  His wife was Susannah Mobley, to whom he was married in Belmont county, Ohio. Nathan Mobley and Susannah Ward, who came into Monroe county in 1856.  The children of Mr. and Mrs. More are: Alexander, born Sept. 11, 1857, lives in Sunsbury township; Samantha (Hobbs), Nov. 7, 1859, lives in Adams township, Monroe county; Louis L., Mar. 24, 1860, lives in Sunsbury township; Jacob L., March 5, 1864; John C., Feb. 18, 1866; Florence E., June 8, 1868; Annie L., June 8, 1876.  Mr. More is engaged in farming in Sunsbury township.  Address, Beallsville, Monroe county, Ohio.

ROBERT MORRIS - is a son of William Morris and Anna Wells, both of whom died in Monroe county.  He was born in Monroe county, June 10, 1824.  He was married in the same county, Oct. 18, 1844, to Rebecca A. Connor, who was born in Hardin county, Sept. 15, 1825.  Her father was John Connor and her mother was Charlotte Selvie, who died in Monroe county.  The children of Robert and Rebecca Morris are:  William H., born May 17, 1846, resides in Wood county, West Virginia; Mary  J, Aug. 25, 1848, and lives in West Virginia; Levi T., May 2, 1852, lives in Wood county, West Virginia; Charlotte, Sept. 1, 1856, lives in Bethel township; Leona E., Jan. 16, 1863, resides at home; Robert W., Jan. 21, 1868, resides at home.  Mr. Morris had one son, William H., in the late war, a member of the 92d Ohio Volunteer Infantry.  His grandfather, Elisha Murray, was a soldier of 1812.  Mr. Morris' father died Mar. 26, 1837, and his mother July 17, 1867.  They were both members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.  Mr. Morris has a farm of 183 acres in Elk township, Noble county, Ohio.  He is a hard-working man and an honest one.  Address, Harriettsville, Noble county, Ohio.  Occupation, farming.

STEPHEN H. MORRIS - son of Thomas C. and Jane V. Morris, was born in Monroe county, Ohio June 25, 1850.  He was married in Asbury Chapel, by Reverend A. G. Robb, Sept. 6, 1876, to Emma B. Hobbs, born at Wheeling, West Virginia, Feb. 26, 1858, and daughter of Richard and Ellen F. Hobbs; their children are: Martha E., born May 30, 1877; Gertrude V., Dec. 23, 1878; Mary B., Sept. 5, 1880, Arthur S., Dec. 23, 1881, and all reside in Monroe county.  Mr. Morris had two brothers in the war, Wm. J. and Theodore Morris George Hobbs, and family left Liverpool, England, in May , 1833, and landed at Baltimore, Maryland, in August, after being on the water eleven weeks, seven weeks out of sight of land.  They then  came to Wheeling, West Virginia, remained there over six years, thence to Ohio, and settled in Monroe county.  They were among the pioneers of the county.  Mr. Morris' first wife was Carolina A. Morris, daughter of Richard and Martha J. Hobbs.  She was born Sept. 17, 1845, died Nov. 3, 1874; they were married Oct. 21, 1873.  Richard and Martha Morris were married in Monroe county, Feb. 6, 1844.  Mr. Morris' parents were Joshua and Charity MorrisMartha J.'s parents were George and Martha Hobbs.  Richard Morris was born Sept. 4, 1815, died Aug. 29, 1864. Martha was born Apr. 23, 1823, and is now living in Adams township.  Her son-in-law is a school teacher and farmer.  Address, Beallsville, Monroe county.

WILLIAM J. MOORE – a merchant at Jerusalem, was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, Nov. 22, 1853.  His wife, to whom he was married at Jerusalem, Oct. 4, 1877, was Debbie E. Gatchell.  She was born in Monroe county, Ohio.  Her parents are Robert and Mary Ann Gatchell.  Mr. Moore’s parents are William Thompson, and Mary K. Moore.  William J. settled in this county in 1859.  He was department postmaster in Jerusalem, six years.  Their children are:  Charles Thurman, born July 14, 1878, and Mary Rosene?, Sept. 23, 1881; both reside at home.  Address, William J. Salem Twp. -
JACOB T. MORRILL - is an attorney-at-law and notary public of Clarington.  He was born in Kennebec county, Maine, Sept. 30, 1822.  His father, Noah Morrill, died in 1834, and his mother, Sarah P. Prescott, in 1856.  They settled in this county in 1827.  Noah Morrill came from Maine to Wheeling, Virginia, in 1825.  He remained there about a year, and then came on to Woodsfield, which was then but a hamlet in the woods.  The court-house was the only brick building in the town, the others being rude log houses.  The jail was a log building.  There were then but two resident attorneys in the town, Edward Archbold and Samuel H. Guthrie.  Mr. Morrill, senior, was a manufacturer of pumps.  There was then no school-house in Woodsfield.  Mr. J. T. Morrill read law under Judge John W. Okey, now one of the Supreme Judges of the State.  He was admitted to the bar Apr. 4, 1860, and has practiced continuously in this county since.  He held the office of justice of the peace for twenty-four years in succession in this township, was postmaster for seventeen years in this town, holding besides many minor offices.  Mr. Morrill married here, Jan. 20, 1842, Dorintha M. Bracey, who was born in Marshall county, Virginia, Aug. 22, 1820.  Of their children, Elizabeth J., Sarah E. and Ruth A., reside at Wheeling, West Virginia; Leander B., and James C., at Bellaire; and John E. and Nancy A., at Clarington.  Leander served three years in the war, enlisting at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Sept., 1863, in the 14th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.  He was first in the infantry and then in the mounted Infantry, and served until the close of the war.

Adams Twp. -
THOMAS MORROW - was born in Belmont county, Ohio, July 4, 1828, and settled in Monroe county in 1860.  His wife Sarah (Harrison) Morrow, daughter of William and Elizabeth Harrison deceased, was born in England, Feb. 28, 1832; their marriage took place at St. Clairsville, Ohio, Sept. 26, 1850, and they have the following children: Lizzie E., born Mr. 18, 1855, attending school at Valparaiso, Ind.; Maggie A. (Morrow) Tracy, June 6, 1856, resides in Tyler county, West Virginia; William J., Mar. 18, 1857, is in Nebraska; Harry T., Dec. 6, 1858, is a graduate of Valparaiso, residence, St. Louis, Missouri; Mollie M., May 14, 1863, Valparaiso, attending school.  Mr. Morrow's parents, John and Ellen (White) Morrow, both deceased, settled in Adams township, when it was very thinly populated, took up government land in the woods, and built up a home.  They went through all the hardships incident to the settlement of a new country.  Mrs. Morrow, senior, departed this life June 2, 1844, at the age of 44 years.  Mr. Morrow died Oct. 9, 1874, at the ripe age of 90 years.  He was universally respected and honored.  Mr. Morrow's brother, John, was a participant in the late war, a member of company E, 116th Ohio Volunteer Infantry; he was wounded at the battle of Winchester, and taken prisoner; was in all the battles of the regiment and honorable discharged at the close of the war.  Mr. Morrow is a farmer, and may be addressed at Irish Ridge, Monroe county, Ohio.

JAMES MYERS -  and Rachel A. Timmons were married in Perry township, Monroe county, Ohio Dec. 6, 1867.  He is a native of Belmont county, Ohio, and the date of his birth Nov. 24, 1814.  His parents, both of whom are deceased, were George and Hannah (Dixon) Myers, settlers of this county in 1848.  His wife's parents are Samuel and Susanna (McMullen) Timmons, the former deceased.  Mrs. Myers was born in Seneca township, Monroe county, Nov. 28, 1836; she was formerly married to Theodore Flowers, by whom she had one child, William S. Flowers, born Apr. 4, 1850, died Sept. 12, 1881.  When Mr. Myers settled in Jackson township, there was still some government land; he entered 120 acres in Marietta land district.  He was elected recorder of Monroe county, in October, 1878; his term will expire on the first Monday in January, 1884.  His brother, William, enlisted at New Martinsville, West Virginia, in October, 1861; he lost his health, and was discharged for disability in July, 1862, at West Alexandria.  Mr. Myers' postoffice address is Woodsfield, Monroe county, Ohio.
