MARTIN T. ABBOTT,
vice president of The Stevenson Company,
Wellsville, is among the successful and
well known business men of Columbiana
County. He was born at Patriot,
Ind., Nov. 10, 1877, and is the son of
Thomas and Almira (Humphrey) Abbott.
Thomas Abbott, a native of Massachusetts,
settled in Switzerland County, Ind.,
during the early days and became a
prosperous farmer and stockman. He
was a Republican, a member of the
Methodist Church and affiliated with the
Masonic Lodge. He died in 1904 and
his wife, a native of Switzerland
County, Ind., died in 1922. To
Mr. and Mrs. Abbott were born ten
children as follows: Arthur,
deceased; James W., lives at
Warsaw, Ky.; Hulda, the widow of
Thomas C. Gillis, lives at Troy,
Ohio; Elizabeth, deceased, was
the wife of Louis Wilson,
Cincinnati, Ohio; Rev. Ulysses Grant,
a minister of the Methodist Church,
Indianapolis, Ind.; Cornelius H.,
deceased; Theodore, lives in
California; Ella, married
Clarence Keaton, lives in Crawford
County, Ind.; Martin T., the
subject of this sketch; and Pearl,
the widow of Lemert Cook, lives
in Indianapolis, Ind.
Martin T. Abbott spent his boyhood at Patriot,
Ind., and was educated there. His
first employment was as a steward on
government light house Steamer Golden
Rod on Ohio River. He served
during the Spanish-American War as a
member of the Seventh United States
Cavalry and was stationed in Cuba for
five months. He enlisted in
Cincinnati, Ohio, and was in service one
year. In 1905, Mr. Abbott
came to Wellsville, where he became
identified with the sales department of
the Stevenson Company, of which he has
served as vice president since 1917.
On Oct. 12, 1904, Mr. Abbott was united in
marriage with Miss Erla Stevenson,
who was born at Wellsville, July 19,
1880, the daughter of Charles G. and
Anna (Askew) Stevenson, natives of
Ohio. Mr. Stevenson,
deceased, served as president and
general manager of the business and was
vice president of The Peoples National
Bank, president of the Home Savings and
Loan Company and was also president of
Chamber of Commerce. He died in
September, 1917, and is buried at
Wellsville. His wife resides with
her daughter, Mrs. Abbott.
Another daughter, Mary, married
W. E. Paisley, auditor of the
Valley Camp Coal Company, Cleveland.
Mr. and Mrs. Abbott have no
children.
Mr. Abbott is a staunch Republican, a
member of the United Presbyterian Church
and is affiliated with the Masonic
Order, being the 32nd degree Mason, a
Knight Templar and Shriner. He is
also a member of the Rotary Club of East
Liverpool, Classification foundry and
machine manufacturer. Mr.
Abbott is a stockholder of the
Peoples Bank of Wellsville. During
the World War he was one of the three
manufacturing committee for all World
War drives and was city chairman for war
savings stamps. He is a man of
progressive ideas in his business and a
citizen of whom the community is proud.

DR. C. F. ADAM,
of East Liverpool, is a successful and
widely known dentist of Columbiana
County. He was born in this city,
July 13, 1890, and is the son of George
M. and Hattie (Pettit) Adam.
George M. Adam, deceased, was a veteran of the
Civil War. He was a carriage and
harness maker by trade and with his
brother, M. B. Adam, engaged in
business at Lisbon, Ohio. He was
retired from business at the time of his
death in October, 1916. Mr.
Adam served throughout the Civil War
with the 84th Ohio Volunteer Infantry
and was taken prisoner at Harpers Ferry.
He was a lieutenant at the time of his
discharge and was one of the organizers
of the General Lyon Post. Grand
Army of the Republic, East Liverpool.
Hattie (Pettit) Adam was the
daughter of Austin J. and
Martha Pettit. He was a
justice of the peace at Smith's Ferry,
Pa., for many years and a prominent
Mason of that section, having held the
32nd degree. He was the first
worshipful master of his lodge.
Mrs. George M. Adam; Ray T.,
mention of whom is made below; and C.
F., the subject of this sketch.
Ray T. Adam was born at Smiths Ferry, Pa., March
25, 1888. He was reared and
educated in East Liverpool and was
connected with the R. W. Bell
Company as their Cleveland
representative. He later was
identified with the America Sheet and
Tin Plate Company at Chester, W. Va.,
until 1917, at which time he volunteered
for service in the World War. He
was sent to Camp Lee, Virginia, and
later to Camp Meigs, where he was
attached to the quartermaster's corps.
He was then attached to the Motor
Transport Corps, 302 Unit, and sent to
England, and later to France. He
was discharged at Camp Meade, Md., June
20, 1919, as a sergeant senior grade,
this being the highest non-commissioned
officer's rank. Mr. Adam is
now successfully engaged in the real
estate and insurance business in East
Liverpool. He is a Republican, a
member of the First Methodist Church,
the American Legion, LaSociete des 40
Hommes et 8 Chevaux, and the Elks Lodge.
Dr. C. F. Adam was educated in the public and
high schools of East Liverpool and in
1919 received his degree as Doctor of
Dentistry from the University of
Michigan. He spent the following
year as an instructor in the university
and in 1920 and 1921 was engaged in the
practice of his profession at Monroe,
Mich. He has been located in East
Liverpool since 1922 with offices in the
Little Building.
On Aug. 27, 1923, Doctor Adam was united in
marriage with Miss Sarah Weaver,
of East Liverpool, and the daughter of
Charles O. and Nellie (Allison)
Weaver, who live retired in East
Liverpool.
In politics Doctor Adam is a Republican.
He holds membership in he Methodist
Episcopal church, the Masonic Lodge,
Delta Sigma Delta fraternity, Corydon
Palmer Dental Society, Ohio State Dental
Association, and the National Dental
Association. He is a progressive
citizen.

SAMUEL
J. ADAMS is well and favorably known in Wellsville
and is a veteran of the World War. He was born on a farm
just north of Wellsville, Oct. 26, 1897, and is the son of
Harry Lincoln and Catherine (Myers) Adams.
Harry Lincoln Adams,
deceased, was born at Elizabeth, Pa., in 1864. He
removed to Columbiana County in 1882 and engaged in general
farming and stock raising. He improved 60 acres of land and
specialized in dairy farming, his farm being known as
"Clover Hill Dairy Farm." He was a Republican, a
member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and belonged to the
Knights of Pythias. His wife, who was a native of
Columbiana County, died in February, 1902. Mr.
and Mrs. Adams had three children:
Samuel J., the subject of this sketch; Harry,
lives in Detroit, Mich., is a veteran of the World War,
having served in France
with Base Hospital No. 51; and Catherine Ethel,
married Austin E. Hastings, lives on the Adams
farm near Wellsville.
Samuel J. Adams received his early education in
the schools of Yellow Creek Township and was graduated from
Wellsville High School in 1915. He was among the first
to enlist from Columbiana County during the World War,
having enlisted for service ay 1, 1917. He was a
member of Company C, First Field Signal Battalion, Second
Division, and served for two years, 16 months of which was
spent in France. He served 14 months with the famous
Marine Corps. Mr. Adams engaged in five
important battles of the war and was discharged at Camp
Sherman, Ohio, April 28, 1919. He returned to the
employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad in Wellsville, with whom
he had been connected prior to the war. In 1922 he
became identified with the McLain Fire Brick Company as
timekeeper.
On Aug. 18, 1921, Mr. Adams was married to
Miss Hannah Dorothy Davidson, who was born in
Wellsville, Oct. 12, 1898, the daughter of James A. and
Maud (Springer) Davidson, residents of Wellsville. Mr.
and Mrs. Davidson have three children: Helen M., a
teacher, lives at home; Mrs. Adams; and
Dean, a teacher, lives at home. Mr. and Mrs. Adams
have a daughter, Catherine Elaine, born Oct. 27, 1922.
Mr. Adams is a member of the United
Presbyterian Church, the Elks Lodge, No. 1040, Wellsville,
Ohio, and is a past commander of American Legion Post No.
70. He is a Republican.

LESTER
C. ANDERSON, a progressive and enterprising business
man of Wellsville, was born in this city, Sept. 8, 1888, and
is the son of William and Della (McBane) Anderson.
Both William Anderson
and his wife are natives of Yellow Creek Township,
Columbiana County. For many years he engaged in road
building and now lives retired in Wellsville. Mr.
and Mrs. Anderson have three children: Lester
C., the subject of this sketch; Clifford, lives
in Wellsville; and Ica, married William Quinn,
lives in Wellsville.
After completing his schooling in the public schools of
Wellsville, Lester C. Anderson engaged in business
with his father for several years. He established his
present business at Wellsville in 1921 and owns one of the
finest and most modern dairies in the county. It is
located at
801 Broadway.
On Apr. 2, 1913, Mr. Anderson was united in
marriage with Miss Elizabeth Frischkorn, a native of
Pennsylvania and the daughter of Peter and Eva (Link)
Frischkorn, who came to this country from Germany many
years ago and settled in Wellsville in 1893. Mr.
and Mrs. Frischkorn live retired on a farm in Yellow
Creek Township. They have four children: Mrs.
Anderson; Adam, a farmer, lives in Yellow Creek
Township; Margaret and Clara, live on a farm
in Yellow Creek Township. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson
have no children.
Mr. and Mrs. Anderson are identified with the
Lutheran Church and have a wide acquaintance in Columbiana
County.

WILLIAM
T. ARMSTRONG, is a well known and substantial citizen
of East Liverpool, where he is proprietor of the W. T.
Anderson Coal & Ice Company. He is a native of
Ohio, born at St. Clairsville, Feb. 26, 1866, the son of
James and Margaret (Courtney) Anderson.
Both James Anderson and his wife were natives of
Ireland and are now deceased. They were early settlers
of Ohio, where he engaged in general farming for many years.
To Mr. and Mrs. Anderson were born nine children:
Alex, deceased; Ross, lives at Rapids City, S. D.;
John, deceased; Margaret, lives in Los Angeles,
Cal.; Henry, deceased; William T., the subject
of this sketch Joseph and Matilda, both
deceased; and one child died in infancy.
William T. Anderson spent his boyhood at St.
Clairsville and was educated in the public and high school
there. He learned the plumber's trade at Bellaire,
Ohio, and in 1890 located in East Liverpool where he was
employed by the American Sewer Pipe Works. In 1909 he
established his present business which has developed into
one of the extensive enterprises of its kind in the county.
His place of business covers one acre of ground and has a
capacity for the storage of 12 cars of coal.
In 1891 Mr. Anderson was married to
Miss Cora B. Cain, of New Cumberland, W. Va., and the
daughter of John and Jane Cain, both deceased.
Mr. and Mrs. Anderson have ten children, as follows:
J. Ross, married Lillian Wheatley,
lives at East Liverpool, where he is engaged in business
with his father, and they have four children, Lillian,
Merle, Anna May, and Louisa;
William Earl, employed by the Pennsylvania
Railroad Company, is a veteran of the World War, having
served with Pershing's cavalry, 15th U. S. Cavalry,
First Division; John, also a World War veteran, now
serving with the U. S. army in the Hawaiian Islands;
Howard, at home; Frank, with the U. S. army in
the Hawaiian Islands; Thomas, Merle, Robert and
Joseph, all at home; and Margaret, deceased.
Mr. Anderson is a Democrat, a member of
the United Presbyterian Church and belongs to the Masonic
Lodge and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Rev. John A. Armstrong |
REV. JOHN A. ARMSTRONG, who
lives retired at Wellsville, is one of
the highly esteemed and honored pioneer
citizens of Columbiana County. He
is a veteran of the Civil War.
Mr. Armstrong was born in Washington
County, Pa., Jan. 24, 1844, and is the
son of James and Jane (Patterson)
Armstrong.
James Armstrong was born in Ireland, Feb. 4, 1800.
When he was two years of age his family
came to the United States and settled in
Washington Co., Pa., where he spent the
remainder of his life as a farmer.
He died March 13, 1865, and his wife
died Jan. 15, 1885. They are
buried in Washington county, Pa.
To Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong the
following children were born: James
P., died Mar. 27, 1907; Esther
A., died in 1904, was the wife of
David Liggett; Joseph, a Civil War
veteran, died in 1913; Elizabeth,
died in 1923, was the wife of Robert
Dever; Samuel S., a Civil War
veteran, died Oct. 2, 1923; Thomas J.,
a Civil War veteran, lives retired in
Cincinnati, Ohio; John A., the
subject of this sketch; Sarah C.,
died in 1861; and M. L., lives in
Los Angeles, Calif.
John A. Armstrong received his education in the
district schools and began life as a
farmer. He enlisted in 1863 for
service during the Civil War and was
with Company K, 46th Pennsylvania
Volunteer Infantry. He
participated in many major engagements
of the war and was discharged July 15,
1865. Mr. Armstrong has
lived at Wellsville since 1888 and has
been a minister of the Christian Church
since 1880. He also had various
business interests during his active
career and was an owner of a small tract
of land before coming to Wellsville.
On Sept. 20, 1866, Mr. Armstrong was united in
marriage with Miss Sarah C. Hanen,
who was born in Ohio, July 2, 1848, the
daughter of John and Nancy (Rawlston)
Hanen, both deceased. Mr.
Hanen was an extensive breeder of
sheep in Washington County, Pa., for
many years and was widely known.
To Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong were
born three children: John Charles,
born Aug. 3, 1868, lives at
Wellsville, where he is connected with
the Pennsylvania Railroad; Emerson L.,
born Aug. 6, 1871, lives at Wellsville
and is an engineer on the Pennsylvania
Railroad; and Oscar A., who was a
passenger conductor on the Pennsylvania
railroad, born Feb. 27, 1879, died Nov.
17, 1921
Mr. Armstrong has been a life long Republican,
and is affiliated with the Masonic
Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows
and Knights of Pythias, is a member of
the Grand Army of the Republic of East
Liverpool, General Lyons Post No. 46 and
for the past three years has been
Chaplin, preaching a good many of the
old soldiers funerals. He is
widely known and is among the leading
pioneer citizens of the county.

E. K.
ANDERSON is a well known and substantial citizen of
Wellsville and Columbiana County. He was born in Yellow
Creek Township, Apr. 14, 1859, the son of Andrew and Lucy
(Knipper) Anderson.
Andrew Anderson, deceased, was a veteran
of the Civil War. He was born in Yellow Creek Township
and spent his entire life in this
county, where he was successfully engaged in general farming
and stock raising. He was a Democrat and a member of
the Methodist Church. Mr. Anderson died
Jan. 14, 1893, and his wife died Aug. 6, 1920. They
had six children, as follows: E. K., the subject of
this sketch; William, lives at Wellsville; Laura,
lives at Wellsville; Ica, deceased, was the wife of
Howard Weaver; Leonard, deceased; and
Margaret, lives in Wellsville.
E. K. Anderson attended the district schools of
Yellow Creek Township, and for many years engaged in
construction work, specializing in machine construction.
He is now foreman of highway construction in Columbiana
County.
On Nov. 28, 1888, Mr. Anderson was united
in marriage with Miss Mary Gill, who was born
at Wheeling, W. Va., May 18, 1870, the daughter of W. H.
and Margaret (Martin) Gill, the former a native
of Pennsylvania and the latter of Ohio. Mr.
Gill died May 28, 1911, and his wife died May 24, 1921.
They had the following children: Josephine, married
Jacob Hilton, lives in West Virginia;
William, lives at Wheeling, W. Va.; Mrs.
Anderson; Lilly, the widow of Byron
Craycroft, lives at Wheeling, W. Va.; John, lives
at Wheeling; and George, also lives at Wheeling.
To Mr. and Mrs. Anderson were born two children:
George A., born June 19, 1891, died May 5, 1894; and
Letty L., born Apr. 2, 1894, married Nov. 9, 1920, to
Alvin L. Jones, lives in East Liverpool, and they have a
daughter, Sarah Arlene, born Feb. 16, 1922.
Mr. Anderson holds membership in the
Methodist Church and is a Republican.

WILLIAM ANDERSON,
a well known business man of Wellsville, is a member of a
substantial pioneer family of Columbiana County. He
was born in Yellow Creek Township, Dec. 18, 1862, and is the
son of Andrew and Lucy (Nepper) Anderson.
Andrew Anderson, deceased, wa a veteran of the
Civil War. HE was a native of Yellow Creek Township
and was a prosperous farmer and stockman of that section.
He improved 160 acres of land at Little Beaver Creek and a
log cabin served as the first family home. Mr.
Anderson was a Democrat, a member of the Methodist
Church, and the Grand Army of the Republic. To Mr.
and Mrs. Anderson, who are deceased, the following
children were born: Edwin K., lives at Wellsville, a
sketch of whom appears elsewhere in this history; William,
the subject of this sketch; Laura, lives in
Wellsville; Ica, deceased; and Margaret, lives
in Wellsville.
William Anderson was reared on his
father's farm, attended district school No. 16 in Yellow
Creek Township, and at an early age engaged in the
contracting business. Since 1890 he has conducted a
business at Wellsville and installs machinery and boilers of
all types. His son, Clifford, is associated in
business with him.
On July 21, 1887, Mr. Anderson was united
in marriage with Miss Adelia McBane, of
Pittsburgh, the daughter of Frank and Eliza (Graham)
McBane, both deceased. There were five children in
the McBane family, as follows: Mrs. Anderson;
Margaret, the widow of Osa Boughton,
lives at Wellsville; Olivetta, deceased, was the wife
of Orville Daniels, Indianapolis, Ind.;
Francis, a farmer, lives in Yellow Creek Township; and
Cecelia, married Jack Morgan, lives at
Wellsville. To Mr. and Mrs. Anderson three
children were born: Lester C., born Sept. 8, 1888,
engaged in the dairy business, Wellsville; Clifford,
born May 30, 1890, engaged in business with his father; and
Ica Ulala, born Feb. 4, 1895, married
William Quinn, lives at Wellsville.
Mr. Anderson is a Republican, a member of
the Methodist Church, and is highly esteemed in the
community.

ALHEUS ARTER,
retired, is among the highly esteemed and representative
citizens of Lisbon, where he has spent his entire life.
He was born in this city in 1841, the son of Jacob
Arter.
Jacob Arter was among the first settlers
of Lisbon, having come here in 1830 from his birthplace in
York County, Pa. He engaged in the saddlery and
harness making business and established a business which was
later carried on by his son and grandsons. He is
deceased and is buried in Lisbon.
Alpheus Arter was reared and educated in
Lisbon and ranks among the pioneer business men of this
section. Besides his harness and saddlery business he
founded the Arter Manufacturing Company in 1895,
which is now known as Arter Sons' Company.
Mr. Arter is a stockholder in the Peoples'
Bank of Lisbon and is actively connected with various other
business institutions of the city.
Mr. Arter was married three times. His
first wife was a Miss Huston, three children were
born to this union: Frank, Lyman and Mrs.
Carrie Ramsey, all of whom live in Lisbon.
Mr. Arter's second wife was Sarah
Hamilton. She died 1891; to this union six
children were born: Harry G., a sketch of whom
appears in this volume; Dora M.; Minnie C.;
James S.; Robert, of Lisbon, Ohio, and Allen
who was killed while serving in the World War and is buried
in France. Mr. Arter's present wife was
Nannie Shaw; no children have been born to
this union. Alpheus Arter served in Company C,
Eighty-seventh Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the
Civil War.
Mr. Arter is a Republican and is widely
known in Columbiana County.

HARRY G. ARTER
is among the progressive and successful business men of
Lisbon, where he is engaged in the leather goods business.
He was born in this city, May 26, 1879, and is the son of
Alpheus and Sarah (Hamilton) Arter. A complete
sketch of Alpheus Arter appears elsewhere in
this history.
Harry G. Arter received his education in the
public schools of Lisbon and when a young man learned the
harness making trade in his father's shop. In
partnership with his brothers he now conducts the leather
goods business, known as Arter Sons Company,
which was founded by his father in 1895.
On Oct. 28, 1905, Mr. Arter was united in
marriage with Miss Kittie James of Lisbon, the
daughter of Edward and Mary James.
Mr. James died in 1921 and his wife resides in
Lisbon. Mr. and Mrs. Arter have a son,
Alpheus E., born May 21, 1910.
Mr. Arter is a Republican, a member of
the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Kiwanis Club.
He is esteemed throughout the community as a substantial and
reliable citizen.

ROBERT AULD,
successful and well known building
contractor of Salem, is a native of
Scotland. He was born June 18,
1868, the son of Robert and Jannett
Auld. The father died Jan. 20,
1924 and the mother died May 5, 1905.
The Auld Family came to this country from
Scotland in 1870 and settled at Albany,
in Columbiana County. Robert
Auld, Sr., was greatly interested in
the coal industry and spent 20 years of
his life at Salem, where he died in
1924. His wife is also deceased.
To Mr. and Mrs. Auld were born 12
children, all of whom are living.
Robert Auld grew up in Albany and attended the public
schools there. He was connected
with the Mullins Body Corporation of
Salem for 11 years and in 1905 engaged
in business for himself. He is
responsible for the erection of some of
the finest homes in Salem and vicinity,
among them being the Foitg, Kanderer
and Doctor McGeorge residences.
On Dec. 23, 1891, Mr. Auld was married to
Miss Rosa Whitacre, of Salem, the
daughter of Benjamin and Sarah
Whitacre, both deceased. He
died in 1912 and his wife in 1919.
Mr. and Mrs. Auld
have no children.
Mr. Auld is an independent voter and ranks among
the substantial citizens of Columbiana
County.
