  D. E. JACK is an extensive farmer and stockman of Madison Township and a substantial citizen of Columbiana County.  He was born on the farm where he lives, Jan. 11, 1872, and is the son of Hugh and Isabel (McIntosh) Jack.
     Hugh Jack was born in Scotland and at the age of 20 years came to this country and settled in Madison Township, Columbiana County.  He engaged in general farming and was a stone mason by trade, being a pioneer in the latter field of work in this section.  He took part in the construction of the railroad when it was built through Wellsville.  Mr. Jack was a staunch Republican and a life long member of the Yellow Creek Presbyterian Church. Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Jack: Margaret, W. A., and Charles G., all deceased; and D. E., the subject of this sketch.
     D. E. Jack received his education in Witch Hollow District School, Madison Township, and began his business career in the employ of Riggs Company, general merchants of Wellsville.  After a number of years he engaged in farming and stock raising and since 1909 has lived on his present farm of 77 acres.  Mr. Jack is a grain farmer and also raises a good grade of stock.
     On Oct. 19, 1898, Mr. Jack was married to Miss Mary Nettie McIntosh, who was born on the Jack farm, Jan. 29, 1875, the daughter of William T. and Catherine F. (Falconer) McIntosh, natives of Madison Township.  Mr. McIntosh was a veteran of the Civil War.  He died in January, 1905, and his wife died March 2, 1926.  Mrs. Jack was their only child.  To Mr. and Mrs. Jack were born three children: Catherine Isabel, born July 10, 1901, a graduate of East Liverpool High School, now in the employ of the R. Thomas Company, East Liverpool; Hugh, born in 1907, engaged in farming with his father; and John F., born June 22, 1914, a student.
     Mr. Jack is identified with the Republican party in politics and is a member of the Yellow Creek Presbyterian Church.

  ELWOOD WALTON JACKSON is a substantial and highly esteemed citizen of Columbiana County.  He was born in Butler Township, Sept. 22, 1876, and is a son of William and Lucinda (Shively) Jackson.
     William Jackson, deceased, was born in Richland County, Ohio, the son of John Jackson, who settled in Columbiana County at an early date.  Four of John Jackson's sons lost their lives while serving in the Civil War.  He died in 1894. William Jackson, father of the subject of this sketch, was a stone mason by trade.  He died June 22, 1924, and his wife, a native of Columbiana County, died in 1921.
     Elwood Walton Jackson attended the schools of Georgetown and when a young man learned the blacksmith's trade, at which he has been continuously employed.  He has conducted his own business at Homeworth since 1900, and is well established.
     On Jan. 31, 1898, Mr. Jackson was united in marriage with Miss Blanche Winder, of Hanover Township, Columbiana County, the daughter of L. H. Winder and Helen (Degroff) WinderMr. Winder is deceased and his wife resides at Homeworth.  To Mr. and Mrs. Jackson were born five children: Cordelia Alice, married Plummer Ickes, lives in Knox Township; Blanche Pearl, married Harry Behner, lives at Homeworth, Ohio; Eunice Laverne, Virgil Walton and Frank Donald, all at home.
     Mr. Jackson is a Democrat and a member of the Lutheran Church.  He and his family are favorably known in the county.

  DR. BENJAMIN C. JOHNSON, of Salem, is perhaps one of the best known veterinary surgeons of Columbiana County, where he has been engaged in the practice of his profession for 40 years.  He was born in Butler Township, Columbiana County, March 11, 1868, the son of Dr. Charles and Eliza (Marlnee) Johnson.
     Dr. Charles Johnson, deceased, was a well known veterinarian of this section.  He was the son of Benjamin Johnson, a Quaker, who settled in Columbiana County during the early days in 1811.  To Dr. and Mrs. Johnson the following children were born: Cassius, deceased; Curtis, lives in Columbiana County; Rose and Martha, both deceased; Benjamin C., the subject of this sketch; Edgar, Frank, and Viola, all deceased.
     Dr. Benjamin C. Johnson spent his boyhood in Salem and at an early age became interested in veterinary work with his father, to which profession he has devoted his entire time.
     Dr. Johnson was married to Miss Elsie Ann Carle of Butler Township, Columbiana County, the daughter of Hiram B. and Jeanette (Little) CarleHiram B. Carle was born in Columbiana County, Dec. 10, 1847, the son of Joseph Carle, one of Columbiana County's earliest settlers.  He was born May 26, 1814, and died in July, 1888. To Dr. and Mrs. Johnson three children were born: Annetta B., born Feb. 9, 1887, died at the age of
nine years; Hiram C., married Viola Bott, lives at Sycamore, Pa.; and Bertha Marie Walton, lives at Winona, Ohio, has two children, Helen and Raymond.
     Dr. Johnson is a member of the Friends Church.  He is among the representative citizens of the community and has a wide acquaintance.

  C. A. JOHNSON is among the enterprising and progressive young business men of Columbiana. He was born at Braddock, Pa., March 28, 1899, and is the son of Frank and Mary Johnson.
     After completing his early schooling at Columbiana, C. A. Johnson attended Mt. Union College.  While enrolled there he served for five months as a member of the Student Army Training Corps.  Mr. Johnson has been interested in his present business since 1920, it being then owned by W. L. Augustine, who established it in 1885. During 1920 Mr. Johnson purchased the business.  He is a book dealer and handles a fine grade of stationery and novelties.
     Politically, Mr. Johnson is a Republican. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and the Masonic Lodge and Sigma Nu fraternity.  He is a popular young man in the community and has many friends.

  PAUL A. JOHNSON is a reliable and well known young business man of Leetonia, where he is proprietor of Johnson's Confectionary store.  He was born at Leetonia, May 29, 1889, and is a son of Samuel A. and Frances (Crook) Johnson.
     Samuel A. Johnson was an employee of the rolling mills in Leetonia for many years and later was associated in business with his son.  He died in October, 1923 and his wife died May 29, 1911.  They are buried in Oakdale Cemetery, Leetonia.
     Mr. Johnson established his present business in 1908 and it has been in the same location for the past eleven years, at 244 Main Street.  It is one of the finest stores of its kind in Columbiana County and has a large patronage.
     On Oct. 2, 1908? Mr. Johnson was married to Miss Sarah Steel of Leetonia, a daughter of Amos and Mary (Swinehart) Steel.  Mr. and Mrs. Steel are both deceased and are buried at Lansing, Mich. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson have one child, Mary Frances, born June 24, 1912.
     Mr. Johnson is a Republican, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, is a member of the Kiwanis Club and the Leetonia Business Men's Club.  He is identified with the Masonic Lodge No. 401, Chapter Council of Salem, and the Knights of Pythias of Leetonia.

  THOMAS TECUMSEH JONES is a native of Southern Ohio; was born at Oak Hill; is of Welsh ancestry; has engaged in teaching, journalism and varied writing; was editor of The East Liverpool Evening Review and The East Liverpool Morning Tribune.
