L. S.
WARD, secretary and treasurer of the Columbiana
County Mutual Insurance Company, Lisbon, ranks among the
representative business men and highly esteemed citizens of
Columbiana County. He was born at Franklin Square,
Salem Township, Columbiana County, Dec. 7, 1866, and is the
son of Levi and Angeline (George) Ward, both
deceased. Mr. Ward was a prosperous farmer of
Salem Township for many years. He and his wife are
buried in the Kemble Church Cemetery.
L. S. Ward attended the district schools of
Salem Township and Mount Hope Academy, one of the early
schools of Columbiana County. He taught school for
several years and was later identified with the American
Sewer Pipe Company, and the American Tin Plate Company at
Lisbon, Ohio and Chester W. Va. Since 1905 Mr. Ward
has been connected with the Columbiana County Mutual
Insurance Company in various capacities and since 1922 he
has been secretary and treasurer.
On April 23, 1890, Mr. Ward was united in
marriage with Miss Anna Rees, of Lisbon, and daughter
of John and Mary Rees, both deceased. They have
a daughter, Esther, who is the wife of Dr.
McCandless, of Lisbon, a sketch of whom appears
elsewhere in this history. To Dr. and Mrs. Candless
has been born a daughter, Dorothy Jane.
Mr. Ward is a Republican, a member of the
Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodge, Independent Order of Odd
Fellows, and Kiwanis Club.
The Columbiana County Mutual Insurance Company of
Lisbon was founded March 2, 1837, and is among the oldest
and most reliable insurance businesses in this section of
the country. They are writers of general insurance and
during the year of 1925 carried on $15,155,466 worth of
business. The company operates in Ohio exclusively and
has 100 agents as its representatives. The original
officers and directors of the company were: Benjamin
Hanna, Samuel Shriner, Peter Spiker, J. H. Shields, Godfrey
Beaumont, Henry Trunic, William Carey, Daniel Whitacre, Levi
Hanna, Jonathan Hamilton, Jr., Joshua Hanna, John Armstrong,
William Helman, James McElroy, and William D. Lepper
The company's first policy was issued by Erastus Eells,
first president, to Martin Helman, and covered
household goods.
The present officers of the Columbiana County Mutual
Insurance Company are: S. D. Longshore, president;
and Mr. Ward, secretary and treasurer. The
directors are: S. D. Longshore, Mr. Ward, E. M. Crosser,
C. W. Huston, R. J. Wilcoxen, I. C. Beam, J. J. Bennett,
and Dr. C. McCandless.

DR.
WILLIAM E. WARD. Ranking among the leading
young dentists of Columbiana County is Dr. W. E. Ward
of Leetonia. He was born at Atlanta, Ind., Oct. 29,
1897, the son of W. E. and Florence E. (Wilson) Ward.
W. E. Ward, who lives retired at Wellsville, Ohio,
was born at Warren, Ohio, in 1859. His wife was born
at Niles, Ohio, in 1860. In 1909 they removed to
Wellsville, where Mr. Ward served as superintendent
of the American Sheet & Tin Plate Company until his
retirement in 1922.
Dr. W. E. Ward was reared and educated at
Wellsville and in 1923 completed his course in dentistry at
the University at Louisville, Ky. In January, 1925, he
established his office at Leetonia.
Doctor Ward was married July 12, 1924, to
Miss Florence E. Martin of Wellsville, Ohio, the
daughter of L. I. and Bessie (Wickline) Martin,
residents of Wellsville.
Doctor Ward is a Republican, a member of the
Methodist Episcopal Church, the Masonic Lodge and Kiwanis
Club.

CHARLES WARNER, a highly
respected and well known citizen of Wellsville, was born in
Sweden, Aug. 7, 1867, and is a son of Gustave and Sophia
Warner, both deceased.
Charles Warner spent his boyhood in his native land and
in 1888 came to the United States. He spent a few
years at McKeesport, Pa., as a mechanic, later lived at
Duquesne, Pa. In 1894 he returned to McKeesport, Pa.,
as a mechanic, later lived at Duquesne, Pa. In 1894 he
returned to McKeesport, and in 1897 went to Monessen, Pa.
In 1909 he went to Pittsburgh, Pa., and in 1918 went to
Sharon, Pa., where he remained until 1919. He then
came to Wellsville, where he is connected with the American
Sheet & Tin Plate Company as a master mechanic. He has
been in the employ of this company for many years, having
been transferred from the above named places from time to
time.
On Jan. 1, 1891, Mr. Warner was married to
Miss Emma Johnson a native of Sweden, born Mar. 25,
1866, and the daughter of John and Johanna Johnson
To r. and Mrs. Warner were born three children:
Carl Samuel, born Nov. 4, 1891, a master mechanic with the
American Sheet & Tin Plate Company at Sharon, Pa.: John
Theodore, born Nov. 24, 1894, also in the employ of
the American Sheet & Tin Plate Company at Sharon, Pa., is a
World War veteran, having served overseas with Company B.,
15th Regiment; and Alma Amanda, born July 17,
1897, married Rev. William M. Diffenderfer, a
minister of the St. Paul Reformed Church, Sharon, Pa.
There are two grandchildren, Victor Charles
and William M. Diffenderfer.
Mr. Warner is a Republican and a member
of the Lutheran Church. He is a dependable citizen and
stands high in the community.

WILLIAM E. WARREN.
Numbered among the representative members of the bar of
Columbiana County is William E. Warren, who is
successfully engaged in the practice of law at Leetonia.
He was born in Middleton Township, Columbiana County, Mar.
7, 1865, the son of John B. and Lucy (Underwood) Warren.
John B. Warren, deceased, was a veteran of the
Civil War. He was a native of Little Bolton,
Lancashire, England, and migrated to the United States in
1857. In September, 1861, Mr. Warren enlisted
in Company D, 19th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and took an
active part in the war until 1863 when he was discharged on
account of physical disability. Mr. Warren was
for many years a successful farmer of Middleton Township.
There were eight children in the Warren family, as
follows: Hannah, married Emmett Far; Mary,
married John Kaminsky lives at Salem; Joseph,
a farmer, lives in Fairfield Township; William E.,
the subject of this sketch; Lola married Jonas
Moreland; Zula, deceased, was the wife of James
Kridler; Walter, chief of police of East Palestine; and
Effie Gilmore, lives at Lisbon.
William E. Warren was educated in the common
schools of Columbiana County and attended Mt. Hope Academy,
Rogers, Ohio, and Cincinnati, Ohio, Law School. He
read law in the office of C. S. Speaker, Lisbon.
He was admitted to the bar of Ohio June 5, 1890, and to the
United States District and Circuit Courts, Oct. 12, 1898.
He has engaged in the practice of law in Leetonia since that
time and from 1893 until 1914 served as city solicitor.
He also served as post master of Leetonia from July 1, 1914
to Mar. 10, 1920. Mr. Warren was appointed
Referee in Bankruptcy, Columbiana County, No. 1, 1920.
On Jan. 12, 1890, Mr. Warren was united in
marriage with Miss Elizabeth Fife, and they have a
daughter, Pauline M., born Aug. 18, 1892. She
married Clarence Bowser, and lives in Detroit, Mich.
They have two children, Elizabeth and William.
Mrs. Bowser was educated in the public schools of
Leetonia, Mt. Union College and Ohio State University.
Mr. Warren is a Democrat and is affiliated with
the Knights of Pythias and Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
He ranks among the prominent and influential citizens of the
community.

O. C. WEIKART,
vice president of the Farmers & Merchants Banking Company,
East Palestine, is a prominent citizen of Columbiana County.
He was born in Green Township, Mahoning County, Ohio,
Sept. 5, 1857, the son of Andrew James and Catherine
(McCartney) Weikart.
Andrew James Weikart, deceased, was a native of
Mahoning County. He was a prosperous farmer and
specialized in the raising and shipping of grain. He
was also interested in the oil business. Mr.
Weikart died in 1883 and is buried in Hope Cemetery,
Salem. His wife is also deceased. They had four
children: O. C., the subject of this sketch; Mrs.
Miranda Anderson, lives at Kansas City, Mo.; Helen,
lives with her brother in Washingtonville; and Edward M.,
lives at Newburgh, N. Y.
O. C. Weikart has always lived at
Washingtonville and until his retirement in 1923 conducted a
grain business there. He has been identified with the
Farmers & Merchants Banking Company as a director since its
organization in 1907 and is also vice president.
Politically Mr. Weikart is a Democrat.

PAUL
R. WHITE, a substantial and well known citizen of
East Liverpool, is a native of Columbiana County. He
was born at East Liverpool, is a native of Columbiana
County. He was born at East Fairfield, Nov. 8, 1887,
and is the son of K. R. and Leona (McMillan) White.
K. R. White was born in Columbiana County in 1848,
the son of John White, who died while in service
during the Civil War. He is a veterinary surgeon at
New Waterford, Ohio. He is a Republican and a
prominent politician of that section, having served as
constable of Elk Run Township for 13 years. His
wife was born in Columbiana County in 1848. Seven
children were born to Mr. and Mrs. White as follows:
William B., lives in Youngstown, Ohio; Paul R.,
the subject of this sketch; Frank J., born Dec. 25,
1889, lives at East Palestine, Ohio, is a veteran of the
World War, having served with the 37th Division; Lola,
married William Prather, lives at Salem; John,
lives at Salem; Naomi, married Donald Bradfield,
lives in East Liverpool; and Clara, deceased.
Paul R. White received his education in the
public schools and at an early age learned the pottery trade
at Niles, Ohio. In 1902 he located at Columbiana and
in January, 1909, removed to East Liverpool, where he was
employed in the potteries. He later was connected with
the Crook Furniture Company and the Moore Furniture Company,
having remained with the latter concern for ten years.
Since 1920 Mr. White has successfully conducted a
furniture and upholstery business at Broadway and East Third
Street.
On Feb. 8, 1912, Mr. White was united in
marriage with Miss Lydia McDevitt of Lisbon, Ohio,
the daughter of Reuben and Rebecca (McCormick) McDevitt.
Mr. McDevitt lives retired at Lisbon. His wife
is deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. White four
children have been born: Pauline, Robert, Betty
Jane, and Verna Jean.
Mr. White is a Republican, a member of the First
Christian Church and belongs to the Sons of Veterans, East
Liverpool. The White family ranks among the
favorably known pioneer families of Columbiana County.

C. M. WILSON,
who is successfully engaged in the jewelry business at
Salem, is a substantial citizen of Columbiana County.
He was born in Salem, Apr. 2, 1867, and is the son of
Isaac G. and Anna (Toulman) Wilson.
Isaac G. Wilson, deceased, was a native of
Wilmington, Pa., and the son of Marmaduke Wilson, who
settled in Salem with his family in 1865 and conducted one
of the first hotels here, the Salem House. He was the
son of Samuel Wilson, who served throughout the War
of 1812. Isaac G. Wilson learned the
boilermaker's trade in the employ of the Salem Boiler Works,
of which he was later the owner. He conducted this
business for many years and after its sale was identified
with the Mullins Body Corporation of Salem for
several years. He was a prominent politician of his
time and served as city commissioner and service director.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Wilson are deceased. She was a
native of England and died in 1913. Only one child was
born to Mr. and Mrs. Wilson, C. M., the subject of
this sketch.
C. M. Wilson spent his boyhood in Salem and
attended the public schools. He was employed by his
uncle, S. D. Wilson, jeweler, for a time and in 1896
established his present business. He handles a high
grade line of jewelry, clocks, silverware, etc. He
also is a dealer in pianos, victrolas, radios, and other
musical instruments.
In 1890 Mr. Wilson was married to Miss Iva A.
Randels, of Salem, the daughter of J. W. and Maria (Kamp)
Randels, both deceased. They have no children.
Politically, Mr. Wilson is a Republican.
He holds membership in the Presbyterian Church and the
Masonic Lodge and the Wilson family has always been
representative of the best citizenship in the county.

ROBERT V. WILSON
is a reliable citizen and successful young business man of
Salem, where he is part owner of the Rembrandt Studio.
He was born at Lisbon, Ohio, Jan. 16, 1893, and is the son
of Homer B. and Lillie Agnes (Spence) Wilson.
Homer B. Wilson and his wife are natives of
Columbiana County and residents of Lisbon, where he is
engaged in the grocery business. They have four
children: Robert V., the subject of this sketch;
F. A., lives in Cleveland; Harold H., lives in
Lisbon; and Bernice, lives in Cleveland.
Robert V. Wilson received his education in the
public schools of Lisbon and has always been interested in
photography. He spent several years in Pittsburgh in
that line of work as well as in Chautauqua, N. Y., and
Cleveland. He was connected with the laboratory of the
White Motor Company, Cleveland, for a year, and in 1922
established his business in Salem. Since 1924 Mr.
Wilson has been in partnership with A. C. Falor
and their studio is located at l05½
Main Street.
Mr. Wilson is a veteran of the World War, having
enlisted in April, 1918. He served overseas in the
photographic division of the air service, and was attached
to the 18th Company, Fourth Regiment.
On Nov. 3, 1923, Mr. Wilson was united in
marriage with Miss Edith Ackerson of
Cleveland, a daughter of George H. Ackerson,
deceased.
Mr. Wilson is a member of the American Legion
and belongs to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Kiwanis
Club.

LeROY J. WISE,
one of East Liverpool's enterprising and
successful young business men, is a veteran of the World
War. He was born in this city, Dec. 18, 1893, and is
the son of Jesse and Helen (Nihin) Wise.
Jesse Wise, who lives retired in East Liverpool,
is a native of Beaver County, Pa. His wife was born in
Ireland and came to this country with her parents when a
young girl and settled in East Liverpool, where she has
since resided. Mr. and Mrs. Wise have four
children: LeRoy J., the subject of this sketch;
Francis J., a veteran of the World War, lives at
Wellsville; Hazel, married Harry Woods,
lives in East Liverpool; and Homer, deceased.
After his graduation from East Liverpool High School in
1913, LeRoy J. Wise entered the employ of the
Crucible Steel Company. Three years later he became
connected with the C. G. Anderson Drug Company.
He enlisted in Company E, 10th Ohio National Guards, which
was later mustered into the Federal service as Company A,
134th Infantry, 37th Division. His company was later
changed to Company D, 135th Infantry. He went to
France with this Division and took part in many important
battles of the war, including St. Mihiel, Thaucourt, and the
Argonne. He was wounded during the battle of Thaucourt.
In October, 1918, Mr. Wise was transferred to
the Officers Training Camp at Lyons; France, and was
stationed there at the time of the armistice. He was
discharged as a sargeant. Upon his return to East
Liverpool Mr. Wise resumed his former
employment, but after a short time entered the University of
Pittsburgh. He was graduated from the School of
Pharmacy in 1921. He was associated with the C. G.
Anderson Drug Company until 1924 when he established his
present business at 229 West Sixth Street.
On Feb. 24, 1925, Mr. Wise was united in
marriage with Miss Anna G. Hoffman, the daughter of
Frank and Elizabeth Hoffman, residents of East
Liverpool.
Mr. Wise is a Republican, and belongs to the
American Legion and Elks Lodge. He is well known in
Columbiana County and has many friends.

HENRY
L. WOLF, who lives retired in East Liverpool, is a
veteran of the Civil War and a substantial citizen of
Columbiana County. He was born at Allegheny, Pa., Mar.
5, 1848, and is the son of Henry and Mary (Wylan) Wolf.
Henry Wolf and his wife were born in
Alsace-Lorraine and came to America at an early date.
He was a shoemaker by trade. He enlisted in Company L,
102nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry as a corporal.
He served four years and three months and was wounded during
the battle of the Wilderness. He engaged in all the
important battles and skirmishes of the war, his regiment
being commanded by Colonel Patterson and after his
death at Wilderness by Colonel McElwain. After
the close of the war Mr. Wolf lived in Kansas City,
Mo., where he died. His wife died in East Liverpool.
Mr. and Mrs. Wolf were the parents of the following
children: Anna, died in July, 1922, was the wife of
Henry Shultz, a Civil War veteran, also deceased;
Henry L., the subject of this sketch; Catherine
Elizabeth, deceased, was the wife of Joseph Barker,
of Pittsburgh; John William, a farmer, lives near
East Liverpool; Martin lives in East Liverpool;
Frederick, lives in East Liverpool; Cissy and
John both died in infancy.
Henry L. Wolf spent his boyhood at Allegheny,
Pa., and was 15 years old when he enlisted with his father
for service during the Civil War. He went as a drummer
and saw his father wounded at the battle of the Wilderness.
He was a member of Company L, 102nd Pennsylvania Volunteer
Infantry. Mr. Wolf came to East Liverpool in
1875 and was employed in the local potteries until 1900, at
which time he became interested in house raising, which work
he followed until his retirement in 1922. He lives at
712 Morton Street.
Mr. Wolf married Miss Louisa Wockley, of
Jersey Shore, Pa., and she died Aug. 10, 1908. They
were the parents of the following children: (1)
Margaret, married Ross Paisley, and she is
deceased. They had five children, as follows:
Roy D.; Florence, married B. F. Norton, a World
War veteran and they have two children, Margaret June
and Helen Patricia Norton; Harry F., married I.
Smith, and they have three children, Jean Ann,
Margaret, and Richard; Mildred, married
F. D. Smith, a World War veteran, and they have two
children, Dolores and F. D. Smith, Jr.; and
Margaret, lives in East Liverpool. (2) John D.,
deceased; (3) Harry, lives in East Liverpool; (4)
George, deceased; (5) Lenora; (6) Ida,
deceased; (7) George deceased.
Politically Mr. Wolf is a Republican. He
had the honor of shaking hands with Abraham Lincoln
at Fort Stephenson, near Washington, D. C. Mr. Wolf
is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Grand
Army of the Republic. He has always been a reliable
citizen and he and his family are highly esteemed in the
community in which they live.

J. R.
WOLF, a well known young farmer of St. Clair
Township, is a veteran of the World War. He was born
at Sebring, Ohio, Dec. 19, 1900, and is the son of George
O. and Edna (Douglas) Wolf.
George O. Wolf is a substantial citizen of
Columbiana County. He has spent his entire life in
agricultural work and owns 160 acres of well improved land.
He is a Democrat and a member of the First Christian Church.
To Mr. and Mrs. Wolf 11 children were born, as
follows: J. R., the subject of this sketch;
Margaret, and Georgia, both deceased; Edna,
and Louise, both at home; Virginia, deceased;
Mary, Robert, Fred, Sarah, and George, all at home.
J. R. Wolf attended the public and high schools
of East Liverpool, and learned the potter's trade when a
young man. He is now engaged in general farming and is
meeting with success.
During the World War Mr. Wolf volunteered
for service and enlisted in the Navy, Sept. 1, 1917.
He was stationed at the Great Lakes Training Station, and
later sent to Philadelphia. He did special work with
the Marine Corps at Quantico, Va., and was transferred to U.
S. S. Connecticut at Philadelphia., and was discharged Sept.
1, 1921, as a second class pharmacist's mate.
In 1921 Mr. Wolf was married to Miss
Ruth E. Werner, of East Liverpool, and they had three
children: Ralph Werner; Mildred
Louise; and George Curtis, deceased.
Mr. and Mrs. Wolf hold membership in the First
Christian Church. and are favorably known throughout
Columbiana County.
