JOSEPH M. KELLEY is one
of Salem's most popular young men, where he is connected
with the World War Memorial as manager and director of men's
and boy's activities. He was born in Salem, Sept. 30,
1899, the son of Victor M. and Elizabeth (Smith) Kelley.
Victor M. Kelley was identified with the Buckeye
Engine Company of Salem until the time of his death in 1901.
After completing his early education in Salem,
Joseph M. Kelley was graduated from Kenyon College in
1922. He was prominently identified with the athletics
of that institution and was a member of the varsity
football, basket ball and baseball teams for three years.
Since the erection of the World War Memorial Building in
1924, Mr. Kelley has served as its manager and
athletic director. The building was erected at a cost
of $150,000, has a well equipped gymnasium, club rooms and
an auditorium which seats 600 people. It is the
headquarters for the American Legion, Boy Scouts, and Salem
Chamber of Commerce. Miss Doris
Chandler is in charge of Girl's and Women's activities.
Mr. Kelley is a Republican, a member of
the Masonic Lodge, Salem Country Club, and Delta Tau Delta
fraternity.

JOSEPH McKEE KELLY,
deceased, was for many years a prominent factor in the
affairs of East Liverpool and Columbiana County during the
period of its greatest industrial and social development. He
was born in Bucyrus, Ohio, Aug. 7, 1835, the son of James
and Margaret (McKee) Kelly.
The Kelly family came to America from Ireland
about 1718. Four brothers settled in Burke, or Buck
County, Pa. James Kelly was born in
Westmoreland County, Pa., Dec. 4, 1810. He was a
bridge and canal builder and died in East Liverpool, Oct. 2,
1877. He was a Republican and a member of the First
Presbyterian Church. His wife was born in Westmoreland
County, Pa., in 1813 and died in Minneapolis, Minn., Feb.
22, 1894. Mr. and Mrs. Kelly had two sons:
Joseph McKee, the subject of this sketch; and
Jay A., born at Lisbon, Ohio, in 1845. He died in
East Liverpool, Dec. 31, 1898, and is buried in Riverview
Cemetery.
Joseph McKee Kelly received his education in the
public schools and attended Oberlin College. He was an oil
buyer and operator in the Island Run and Smith's Ferry
district, at first independently and later as a
representative for the Standard Oil Company in the same
district. He was connected with the laying of the
first pipe line for carrying oil laid in the world.
The line extended from the Island Run oil field to
Smith's Ferry; where it was first loaded into barrels
and afterward into large oil tanks built on flat cars.
Mr. Kelly was also a gas operator, being
associated with Col. H. R. Hill, under the firm name
of Hill & Kelly. He was later a
representative for the Bridgewater Gas Company in this city.
The Hill & Kelly gas line was the first in
East Liverpool. They produced the first natural gas in
the world for manufacturing purposes which was in 1878.
He was also one of the founders of the Riverview Cemetery
Association, and for many years its secretary. He was
a stockholder and director in the First National Bank since
its organization and for a number of years its first vice
president. He was one of the organizers of the Union
Building & Loan Company and president of that bank. He
served as a member of the board of education for more than
25 years. Mr. Kelly died in East
Liverpool, Jan. 24, 1910.
Mr. Kelly was married Dec. 14, 1858, to Miss
Sarah Thompson, who was born at Milroy, Mifflin County,
Pa., May 1, 1839. She died June 25, 1892, and is
buried in Riverview Cemetery. On Oct. 29, 1893, Mr.
Kelly was married to Miss Caroline Thompson,
also of Milroy, Pa., born in 1844. She died June 6,
1909.
To Joseph McKee and Sarah (Thompson) Kelly were
born five children, as follows: (1) Mary AIleen Kelly,
born at Eden Valley, Huntingdon County, Pa., Sept. 11, 1862,
died Aug. 14, 1892. She was unmarried.
(2) Alfred Thompson Kelly, born at Eden Valley,
Pa., April 16, 1866. He attended Oberlin College, was
a graduate of Princeton University, and a teller in the
First National Bank of East Liverpool. He was also
extensively interested in stockraising near Spruce Creek,
Pa. He was married Nov. 7, 1900, to Sarah
Thompson of Spruce Creek, Pa. Mr. Kelly
died July 16, 1909, and is buried in East Liverpool.
He was a Republican, a member of "the First Presbyterian
Church and "the Cosmopolitan Club.
(3) John Charles Kelly was born at Eden Valley,
Pa., attended Oberlin College, and is a graduate of
Pennsylvania Military College where he received the degree
of Civil Engineer. From 1900 until 1906 Mr. Kelly
served as county surveyor of Columbiana County and from 1901
until 1920 was city engineer of East Liverpool. He is
a civil engineer, served as city surveyor for many years,
and is now president of the National Drawn Steel Company.
He is a Republican and was elected county commissioner, Nov.
4, 1924. Mr. Kelly was married Oct. 28, 1008,
to Loucile Hackett a native of Michigan and was reared and
educated in Arthur, N. D. She was educated in Three
Rivers, Mich., and the University of Michigan at Ann Harbor,
Mich. He is a member of the Phoenix Club, Belmont
Club, 32nd degree Mason, Pilgrim Commandery, Knights
Templar, Al Koran Shrine, Elks Lodge, East Liverpool Country
Club and the Ohio Society of Engineers.
(4) Dorothy (Kelly) Vodrey was born in East
Liverpool. She attended Wilson College and was married
May 16, 1901, to William H. Vodrey. She is a member
of the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church.
(5) George Harrington Kelly was born in East
Liverpool and is a graduate of Princeton University and the
Law School of Western Reserve University. He is an
attorney in Cleveland and treasurer of the White Motor
Company, also of Cleveland. He was married June 4,
1902, to Miss Laura Gaylord, of Cleveland.
Mr. Kelly is a Republican, and a member of the Union and
Country clubs of Cleveland. Mr. Joseph McKee Kelly was a
Republican and a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

CHARLES T. KENNEDY, one
of Salem's enterprising and successful young business men,
is a veteran of the World War. He was born in this
city, Jan. 25, 1895, and is the son of A. H. and Ella T.
Kennedy.
A. H. Kennedy, retired, is a highly esteemed
citizen of Columbiana County. He was successfully
engaged in the retail business in Salem until his retirement
in 1920 and also held many township and city offices.
He and his wife are members of the Presbyterian Church.
Charles T., the subject of this sketch, is their only
child.
Charles T. Kennedy was graduated from Salem High
School in 1914 and later from Washington & Jefferson
College. On the day of the declaration of the World
War he volunteered for service and served in France as a
member of the 135th Field Artillery. He participated in many
important battles and drives of the war and was discharged
in June, 1918. Mr. Kennedy's first
business venture was as mine superintendent of the Elk Run
Coal Company of Salem, in which capacity he served for two
years. He has since been interested in the real estate
business and has met with uniform success.
On Sept. 19, 1920, Mr. Kennedy was united in
marriage with Miss Marie Murphy, of Salem, the
daughter of Charles and Laura Murphy. Mr.
Murphy is deceased and his wife lives in Salem. Mr.
and Mrs. Kennedy
have a daughter, Marjorie Ann, born in
December, 1922.
Politically, Mr. Kennedy is a Republican.
He is a member of the Presbyterian Church, Elks Lodge, and
Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

JOHN
McBANE KERR has had a successful career as an
agriculturist and is a member of a family that has long been
identified with the history of Columbiana County. He
was born in Madison township, this county, April 17, 1870,
and is the son of Thomas Barr and Nancy (McBane) Kerr.
John McBane, maternal
grandfather of the subject of this sketch, settled in the
county 100 years ago, having come here from Scotland.
He married Miss Jennie Orr of Genesee County, N. Y.,
and they were the parents of five daughters, all of whom are
now deceased except Mrs. Thomas Kerr. The
McBane homestead has always remained in the family and
is now occupied by John McBane Kerr, His
father, Thomas Barr Kerr was born in Washington
County, Pa., Aug. 14, 1841 and in 1856 settled in
Columbiana County, where he engaged in general farming.
He served one hundred days during the Civil War with the
Forty-Third Volunteer Regiment, Ohio National Guard
and died Feb. 2 1900. His widow lives in Yellow Creek
Township, Columbiana county. To Mr. and Mrs. Kerr
were born six children: Mary Alice,
married Samuel J. Kerr, both deceased; Ella E.,
married George F. McCready, lives retired at
Wellsville; John McBane, the subject of this sketch;
Catherine, married William Frazier, lives in
Pittsburgh; Jeanette and Christine, who live with
their mother.
John McBane Kerr grew up on his father's farm,
attended the public high schools of Wellsville, and was also
a student at Indiana State Normal School. He has
always been interested in dairy farming and operates 250
acres of good farm land. Locust Farm, as it is known,
is among Columbiana County's fine farms.
Mr. Kerr was married Jan. 12, 1910, to Miss
Marietta Davidson, of Wellsville, who was born May 26,
1869, the daughter of Peter and Hannah (Fraser) Davidson.
Mrs. Kerr has a brother, James A., who lives at
Wellsville. Her mother died Aug. 19, 1875, and her
father Feb. 18, 1902. By a second marriage to Miss
Nancy Morris, who died Dec. 1, 1904 he had
a daughter, Anna, who married O. H. Lowary,
and they live at Painesville, Ohio. Mr. Davidson
served during the Civil War as a member of Company B, 46th
Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and was a member of the
Grand Army of the Republic. Mr. and Mrs. Kerr
have no children.
Mr. Kerr is president of
the Columbiana County Farm Bureau. He has served as
township trustee for 14 years and was a candidate for county
commissioner on the Republican ticket. He and his wife
are members of the United Presbyterian Church and are highly
esteemed citizens of the community.

MARTIN
KIRKBRIDE, retired, is a veteran of the Civil War and
a reliable and highly esteemed citizen of Columbiana County.
He was born in Monroe County, Ohio, May 24, 1846; and is the
son of Daniel and Eva (Eddy) Kirkbride.
Daniel Kirkbride was among the first
settlers of Monroe County, Ohio. He was born in Ohio
in 1804 and his wife was born in 1810. They had six
children, as follows: Mary Jane, married John Barnes,
both deceased; Emily, married George Wright,
both deceased; George, deceased; Martin, the
subject of this sketch; Isaac W., lives at Calcutta,
Ohio; and Hannah, deceased. Mr.
Kirkbride died in 1851 and his wife died in 1866.
Martin Kirkbride spent his boyhood in
Morgan County and attended school in a log house. He
learned the carpenter trade at an early age and after
several years removed to Monroe County, where he engaged in
milling and coal mining. He spent some time in West
Virginia and since 1920 has lived in Columbiana County, near
Salineville.
On Nov. 22, 1866, Mr. Kirkbride was
united in marriage with Miss Emeline Little,
of Monroe County, Ohio, born April 17, 1887, the daughter of
Albert and Abigail (Daily)
Little, the former a native of Maryland and the latter
of Ohio. Mr. and Mrs. Little, deceased, had
four children: Mrs. Kirkbride, who died
April 27, 1887; Henry, George and Nathan,
all deceased. Nine children were born to Mr. and
Mrs. Kirkbride, as follows: Leander, lives at
Hylandtown, Columbiana County; Eva, married
William Tice, lives in Jefferson County, Ohio;
Zora, lives in Columbiana County; George,
deceased; Herbert C., lives near Houston, Texas;
Albert, lives in Jefferson County, Ohio; Albina,
lives at Martinsville, W. Va.; and two children died in
infancy.
Mr. Kirkbride holds membership in the
Christian Church. He is an independent voter and is
identified with the Grand Army of the
Republic.

HARRY
KOUNTZ is a reliable citizen of Wellsville and a
member of one of Columbiana County's pioneer families.
He was born in this city, Oct. 25, 1877, and is the son of
Jacob G. and Mary (Fraiser) Kountz.
Jacob G. Kountz, deceased,
was a native of Wellsville and the son of Jacob Kountz.
In 1870 he engaged in the meat business in Wellsville and
this business, now conducted by his sons, is known as
Kountz Brothers. Mr. Kountz died Nov. 7, 1918,
and his wife, also a native of Columbiana County,
died April 17, 1885. They were the parents of six
children, as follows: Nina, died at the age of
four years; Nettie, the widow of Herbert Starrett,
lives at Wheeling, W. Va.; Clarence, lives at
Wellsville; Harry, the subject of this sketch;
Mamie, married James Lindsey, lives retired
in Florida and Charles, lives in Wellsville.
Harry Kountz has spent his entire life in
Wellsville. After completing his schooling in the
public schools. he engaged in business with his father.
In 1918, with his brothers, he succeeded to the
business. They have been very successful and are among the
leading merchants of the city.
On May 14, 1902, Mr. Kountz was married to
Miss Martha McMillan, who was born at Fredericktown,
Pa., Feb. 22, 1876, the daughter of Lorenzo and Louisa
(Laughlin) McMillan, natives of Beaver County, Pa.,
Mr. McMillan, a veteran of the Civil War, died in
December, 1918. His wife lives in East
Liverpool. They had six children: Lizzie,
married Arthur Cooper, lives in East Liverpool;
Lulu, married George Rowe, lives in East
Liverpool; James, deceased; Mrs. Kountz; Ollie and
Edward, both deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Kountz
have no children.
Mr. Kountz is identified with the Presbyterian
Church and the Masonic Lodge. He is a Republican.
