E. A. Brown |
EPHRAIM ALEXANDER BROWN.
The subject of this sketch was born in Westmoreland, N. H., Dec. 1,
1807. His early education was received at the Chesterfield
Academy, New Hampshire, and later, after coming to Ohio, he attended
school at Madison, Painesville and Warren. After having
assisted in the mercantile business for a time, he began the
wholesale and retail dry goods business for himself in Pittsburg,
Pa., in which he was engaged about twelve years. After his
retirement from business and at his father's death in 1845, he
purchased and homestead f+
arm in Bloomfield township, where he
resided till his death, Aug. 10, 1894. He carried on general
farming and stock raising with marked success. He was a strong
anti-slavery man and a Republican. The father of the above,
Ephraim Brown, with his uncle, Thomas Howe, came to the
Western Reserve to purchase land for new homes in the summer of
1814. After looking over several localities, they purchased
the entire township of Bloomfield, of Peter C. Brooks, of
Boston. Later Mr. Howe leased his share of the purchase
and Mr. Brown assumed the remainder of the debt, which, by
good management, he was able to liquidate in a few years. Here
he resided till his death, Apr. 7, 1845. Several of his
children were born here, and some members of his family still live
at the old homestead. He several times represented his county
in the Senate and House at Columbus. In politics he was an
ardent abolitionist and a Whig.
