R. H. Parker

Residence of
the late
R. H. Parker,
Kinsman, O.

RUFUS H. PARKER, deceased.  Conspicuous among those men of prominence in Kinsman, Ohio, whose enterprise, business sagacity, upright methods, liberality and public spirit have contributed to the growth of this thriving village, stands the subject of this sketch, who, although having departed to this reward, has left a legacy of rich in good influences which will endure for generations.  We copy in full the obituary of the deceased as it appeared in the local Kinsman paper:

DEATH OF RUFUS H. PARKER.

The people of this community were startled and pained to hear of the death of Rufus H. Parker which occurred early Tuesday morning, August 9.  Mr. Parker was one of our oldest and most highly respected citizens, and his death has cast a sad gloom over the community.  Rufus H. Parker was born in Kinsman Dec. 24, 1827, thus making him early 71 years of age at the time of his death.  His father, Linus Parker, came to the township from Connecticut when a boy 18 years of age.  His mother was Harriet B. Jones, of Hartford.  His father died, in 1839, and his mother died June 8, 1889.  In 1852 Mr. Parker went to California, where he remained until the spring of 1857.  He then returned to Kinsman and for eight years engaged in the occupation of teaming and farming.  In 1865 he hired out to Elijah Beckwith, driving a wagon and selling notions in the wholesale trade.  After working one year for Mr. Beckwith he started in the same business for himself, and continued until 1887.  During this time his headquarters were alternately at Kinsman, Mercer, Sharon and Youngstown.  In 1887 he retired from active business life, and has since lived at the old Parker homestead in the north part of the village.  Rufus H. Parker was prominently identified with all the business interests of Kinsman.  He was greatly beloved by all who knew him, and his death is universally regretted.  He leaves two sisters, Mrs. William Gillis and Miss LeMira Parker together with numerous distant relatives, who have the sincere sympathy of all in their bereavement.  The funeral took place Thursday morning at 11 o'clock.  Interment at Kinsman Cemetery.
It is to such men that we own our rapid and continued advancement in wealth and morality.  He will long be held in affectionate remembrance.

Allen Patterson
ALLEN PATTERSON, extensive lumber dealer and contractor, of Girard.  The subject of this sketch was born in Hartford township, Dec. 31, 1839.  He attended school, and later learned the carpenter's trade.  In 1861 his spirit of patriotism induced him to enlist in Co. G, 6th Ohio Cav.  He was honorably discharged the following year on account of sickness having seen active service in the memorable campaign of Shenandoah Valley.  After returning home, he followed his trade there and and at Sharon, Pa., removing in 1874 to Girard.  Here he has gradually worked into the retail and Lumber business, in which he is now extensively engaged, also continuing his work as a contractor and builder.  Mr. P. was married Oct. 24, 1866, to Miss Margaret M. Shull of Hartford township.  Three children have been born to them.  Our subject is interested in all public affairs, has been a member of the Girard school board for nine years, also a member of the Relief Commission of Trumbull county, for indigent soldiers.  The democratic party claims his vote, and McPherson Post, G. A. R., of Niles, enrolls him as a member.  Mr. P. has three important elements that make for success in this world, viz., a good business, a good home, and a kind heart.
