to America and settled at Wilmington, Del.., in 1783, thence removed to Butler
county, Penn., and in 1814 settled near Jefferson, German township, Harrison
county, where he d. 1869; m. in Pittsburg, Mrs. Eleanor Brown
Work (widow of
William Work), b. 1787, in Baltimore, Md.; d. 1862; had issue; 1.
Andrew, d. in
Sparta, Ill.; 2. John, b. 1814; d. 1875; 3. Nancy; 4. Alexander, b. Aug. 18,
1818; settled in Rumley township about 1883; m. Dec. 7, 1852, Margaret Galbraith, daughter of
Samuel Galbraith, who with his wife, was a native of
Ireland, and who removed from Pennsylvania to Harrison county (had issue: i.
John; ii. Samuel; iii. Alexander, settled in Columbus, Ohio; iv.
Ellen Jane; v.
Isabella Ann, m. Michael Finical); 5. Mary, m.

Scotch-Irish descent, b. in Baltimore, Md., Dec. 3, 1798; removed with his
mother to Charleston, S. C., about 1800, where he remained until 1824, and then
located in Monroe township, Harrison county, Ohio; d. Nov. 10, 1883; m. July 20,
1826, Rebecca Barnhill, b. 1807, in Harrison county; d. Aug. 23, 1873;
daughter of William and Mary Barnhill, natives of Ireland, who settled in
Harrison county; had issue, eleven children, of whom: 1. William B.,
settled at Connotton, Ohio; 2. Mary, m. Joseph McKelveen,
and settled in Scio, Harrison county; 3. Joseph E., b. Aug. 11,
1832; served in the Civil War; m. Jan. 26, 1865, Hannah S. Smith, b .near
Laceysville, daughter of William P. and Margaret Smith, early settlers in
Harrison county; 4. Margaret, m. Jacob Norrick; settled in
Nodaway county, Mo.; 5. Rebecca, m. Simeon Smith, and
settled at Tappan, Ohio; 6. Elizabeth, m. Daniel Smith, and
settled at Laceysville; 7. Cecilia, m. Jonathan Manbeck,
and settled at Des Moines, Iowa; 8. Samuel R., served in the Civil
