GEORGE LAYPORT, (or Leporth, as originally spelled), of French Huguenot descent, emigrated from Maryland to the Beech Flats, near Steubenville, Ohio, before 1800; thence removed to Cadiz township, Harrison county, before 1806, settling on the farm now used as the county infirmary; his settlement at the first was on the frontier, and during the border wars with the Indians, his cabin was burned by them, and his son Thomas, aged eighteen, killed; after peace was declared, one of the Indians who had taken part in this attack, boasted of it in the presence of John Layport (Thomas's brother), during a general muster held in New Philadelphia.  The brother attempted to kill the Indian on the spot, but was restrained.  He afterwards followed him from New Philadelphia across Harrison county, to Salt Run in Jefferson county, and then despatched him while the Indian was stooping down to take a drink (from account of Rev. e. Layport; see also page 54, for a similar incident).  George Layporth was one of the famous hunters of Harrison county in pioneer days, all kinds of wild game, turkeys, deer, wolves, and ears then being plentiful in his neighborhood.  He was also a skilled trapper; and set large steel traps for bear.  "On one occasion," says Howe, in his "History of Ohio," "two of his sons, having trapped a wolf, skinned it alive, and then turned it loose," as an awful example to its fellows of what was in store for them in case they molested the settler's fold.  George Leporth once set a trap for a bear, which was accustomed to follow a certain trail; and placed by a log which the bear would have to step over, expecting it to step into the trap.  But it happened that a Methodist missionary came along the trail that day on his way to a preaching station near what is now Asbury chapel; and his horse stepped into the trap intended for the bear.  Not being strong enough to release the trap by himself, the minister was obliged to wait until Leporth came along before he could proceed.  George Leporth, or Laport, d. before Nov. 29, 1814, leaving a wife, Nancy, and children, John, Margaret Hevlin, Mary Hevlin, Dianna Spiker, Nancy Wilson, Isaac, and Susanna Babb; of these: 1. John, d. February-May, 1839; settled in Stock township (had issue: i. William, b. June 12, 1805; d. Mar. 20, 1867; ii. Abraham, d. September-November, 1850; m. Sarah ____; iii. Isaac, b.
