14, 1791; d. in Green township, Harrison county, Dec. 8, 1871; first settled
in Belmont county, about 1816, removing to Harrison county in 1820; m. in
Washington county, 1816, Violet Scott, d. June 3, 1855;
daughter of Rev. Abram Scott, a Presbyterian minister,
had issue: 1. Margaret Rebecca, b. Dec. 25, 1818; d. July 26,
1843; 2. Abram Scott, b. in Belmont county, Jan. 3, 1821; d.

THOMAS SIMPSON,
a native of the North of Ireland, of Scottish descent, emigrated from county
Londonderry to Baltimore, Md., in 1793, and thence removed to Jefferson
county after 1800; had issue: 1. Andrew settled at Chillicothe, Ohio;
2. John, a native of county Tyrone, Ireland, emigrated to America,
and settled in Washington county, Penn., where he m. Margaret (or
Mary) Mcelroy; removed to Harrison county Ohio, about 1800, and
settled in Stock township, where he d. 1836; had issue, among others: 1.
John, b. 1814; d. 1877; m. 1839, Margaret Law, b. in
county Tyrone, Ireland, 1820, daughter of John and Bessie Linn Law,
who settled in Harrison county, 1830 (had issue: i. Mary Ann,
b. 1841; m. Joseph C. Patterson; ii. Martha, b. 1842, m.
Robert Birney; iii. Margaret, b. 1844, m. Francis
Welch; iv. Matthew W., b Aug. 20, 1846; settled in Washington
township; served in the Civil War; m. Sept. 16, 1869, Rebecca
Birney, daughter of John Birney of Tippecanoe, Ohio; v.
James, b. 1850; vi. Henry, b. 1851; vii. William, twin
brother to Henry, b. 1851; viii. Ella, b. 1857; ix. Homer,
b. 1860; x. Frank H., b. 1860; m. Dec. 7, 1883, Phoebe Taylor,
b. 1865, daughter of Samuel Taylor, of Tuscarawas county (of English
descent), who m. Melissa Laken, and removed to Stock
township); 2. William, settled at Watertown, Erie county, Penn.,
before 1813; 3. Matthew, b. June, 1776; d. in Allegheny, Penn., 1874;
emigrated to America, 1793, and settled at Cadiz; served in the Ohio
Legislature; 4. James, d. at Pittsburg, June 1815; emigrated to
America, 1793, and settled at Cadiz; m. June 10 1806, Sarah
Tingley, b. in New Jersey, May 23, 1781; daughter of Jeremiah
Tingley, who served in the Revolution, and about 1790 removed from South
Amboy, N. J., to Winchester, Va., thence to Warren township, Jefferson
county, Ohio, about 1801 (had issue: i. Matthew, b. at Cadiz, June
20, 1811; d. at Philadelphia, June 18, 1884, bishop in the Methodist
Episcopal Church, m. Ellen H. Verner); 5. Mary, m. John
Eagleson, and settled in Harrison county.

Ireland, emigrated to America and first settled in Washington county, Penn.,
before 1794; removed to Westmoreland county, Penn., and in 1815 located at
Cadiz, Harrison county, Ohio, where he died Sept. 13, 1843; m. in Ireland,
Sarah Jane Coon, d. 1843; had issue among others: 1. William,
b. in Washington county, Penn., 1794; settled in settled in Archer township,
Harrison county, 1825, where he remained until 1855, and then located in
Washington county, Iowa, dying there February 1858; m. 1820, Rachel
Borland, d. March, 1875, daughter of James Borland of Butler
county, Penn. (had issue: i. David; ii. James; ii.
Margaret; iv. John, b. Nov. 9, 1826; m. May 1, 1849, Julia A.
Cox, daughter of George and Sarah Titus Cox, daughter of
George and Sarah Titus Cox; v. Samuel; vi. Robert; vii.
Matthew; viii. Hugh; ix. Thomas; x. Sarah-Jane;
xi. William; xii. Joseph; xiii. Rachel; xiv. David.)
GEORGE COX, father of Julia A. Smylie,
was b. 1784; d. Sept. 12, 1849; son of Richard Cox, of Dutch descent,
who came from New Jersey to Steubenville, Ohio, before 1800, and later
settled in Archer township; m. 1808, Sarah Titus, b. 1786; d.
1877, daughter of Jonathan Titus and wife, who were natives of
Wales, and settled near Cadiz, before 1812; had issue: 1. Mary; 2.
Hiram; 3. Rachel, b. in Steubenville; 4. Jeremiah; 5. George;
6. Jonathan; 7. Sarah; 8 Obediah; 9. John; 10.
Julia-A., m. John Smylie; 11. Martin.
