     JOSEPH GUTHRIE is of Washington county, Pennsylvania, birth.  His father, Joseph Guthrie, Sr., was born in1776, and his mother, Jane, daughter of Thomas Wilson, was born in 1778.  They were married in 1801 and located here in 1830.  Four years later his wife died, and in 1855 he, too, died.  They had thirteen children, of whom five are living, viz.: Thomas; Jane, widow of Thomas Wilson; Mary Ann, wife of Ebenezer Burt, all living here; Hannah, wife of John White, lives in Muskingum county.  Joseph Guthrie, the youngest child, was born in1818 and came to Ohio with his parents.  In 1859 he married Maria Duff, daughter of John and Martha Duff, of Muskingum county.  Miss Duff was born in 1818.  They settled on the homestead where they now live.  He is a farmer and owns two hundred and sixty acres of land.  He has held township offices, and is a deacon of the United Presbyterian church of Lebanon.  - 487

     ANDREW HAMILTON, the third son of Henry and Francis Hamilton, was born in1816 in Ireland.  His father was born in Ireland in 1781, and married Frances Dunbar.  They remained in Ireland until their death.  In 1851 Andrew married Sarah Leipsic, daughter of Edward and Mary Leipsic, of Ireland.  they emigrated to America immediately after their marriage and settled in Washington county, Pennsylvania, where they lived about twelve years.  In 1863 they came to Ohio and settled in Guernsey county, Londonderry township, where they remained twelve years and removed to Adams township.  There they are now living with a family of five children, viz.: Sarah, Margaret, Henry E., Elizabeth, and Jennie.  Mr. Hamilton owns two hundred and twenty acres of land and has a fine home. - 487

     THOMAS KNOX was one of the numerous dwellers in Washington county, Pennsylvania, who sought an Ohio home.  Born at the close of the last century (1799) he accompanied his parents to Adams township in 1815, where he married Jane Miller, daughter of Matthew Miller, of Pennsylvania, in 1832.  She was born in Ireland in 1800.  This lady had an eventful history.  She was captured by the British in 1812, while on her way of America, and kept at Newfoundland for two years.  While there here mother died.  This victim of our second war with Britain on her release settled with her father in Pennsylvania, but shortly moved to Adams township where her husband died in 1870, she following him in1874.  Their children were: Margaret Grear, Mathew, of Knox township; Ann C., and Sarah J.  Matthew M. was born in 1834 and married Mary Jane Rush in 1861.  She is a daughter of Patrick Rush, of Washington county, Pennsylvania, and was born in18935.  Of their seven children six are living, viz: Nettie B., Lizzie M., Jenny M., Sarah A., Thomas, and Eva E.  Anna M. is dead.  - 487

     WILLIAM ALEXANDER, the father of M. R., was of Irish birth, and was born in the old country in 1782.  When two years old his father died, and he emigrated to Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, in 1800.  After forty years' residence there he settled at New Concord, Muskingum county.  In 1805, Elizabeth Lormer, a kins-woman twenty years of age, became his wife.  Their three children are:  Isabella, widow of James Gibson; Martha, widow of Samuel McGarry, both residing in Kansas, and M. R. Alexander, the oldest, who was born in Pennsylvania in 1816, and married Martha Sawhill in 1836.  She was of the same State, and one year younger.  She died in 1859.  Three of her  five children live.  Neely fell a sacrifice on the altar of his country at Shiloh, and Joseph, a valiant soldier, died in camp at Vicksburg in 1862.  Mr. Alexander's second wife, Mary A. Scott, was born in Pennsylvania in 1830, and married in her twenty-ninth year.  She had eight children:  James B., Samuel M., Andrew, Martha E., Charles S., Mary B., Ida May, and Margaret J.  Mr. Alexander settled where he now lives in 1869.  - 487

     WILLIAM CUNNINGHAM, the father of Annie G. Work, was born in Pennsylvania in 1783, and in 1810 was married to Mary Gallagher, who was born in Pennsylvania in 1789.  They remained in their native State until his death in 1818, Mrs. Cunningham surviving him three years.  Their family consisted of four children, three of whom are living - James, Anna G., and John.  Anna G., the subject of this notice, was born in 1814, and in 1838 married James T. Work.  After marriage they settled in Harrison county, where they remained about eighteen years, then removed to Guernsey county in 1856, where Mr. Work died in 1872.  Mrs. Work is still living on the old homestead.  Their family consisted of eight children - Mary J., Margaret E., Martha A., Alexander, Clara, Isabella, Sarah C., George H. - 488

     ROBERT BOYD was born in Ireland in 1798, and came to Pennsylvania in 1820.  While there he married Rachel Frame, who was born in 1805.  This couple lived ten years in Highland township, Muskingum county, and then made their home permanently in Adams township, where the wife is still living on the homestead.  He died in 1874.  They had nine children - Martha, wife of James Bell; Thomas; Joseph; Eliza, wife of Mayberry Smith; William, Robert, James, David, and John.  John L. was born in 1839, and married Mary Ross in 1865.  She was born in 1841.  They lived on the homestead eleven years, and in 1877 purchased a farm near by where they live with their children - Robert W., and Frank.  Mr. Boyd owns eighty acres of land.  He has held various offices, and helped defend the country in the late war. - Pg.  488

     JAMES JOHNSTON was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, in 1795, and married Jane Mehaffey, who was born in December, 1797, in Ireland.  After six years of married life in Pennsylvania, they came here in 1824, and he died in 1868.  He was a farmer and blacksmith.  After his death in 1881.  Her living children are:  Margaret, James, Sarah, Samuel, Jane and Alexander.  Alexander was born in 1821, and married Mary J. Mason in 1846.  She was born in Ireland in 1823.  They remained on the homestead eleven years, and then moved to the eastern side of the township where they still live.  During the war he was sheriff of Guernsey county, and had his headquarters in Cambridge.  He owns four hundred and ninety acres, and was for twelve years a blacksmith as well as a farmer.  His children are:  Emma, Annie, Alice, James, Charles, Jenny, Myrtle, Laura, and Marietta. - 488

     SAMUEL MEHAFFEY, father of John, and grand-father of John Bingham Mehaffey, was a native of Down, Ireland, where he married Margaret Bingham.  This couple lived in their native land until 1812, and then took passage for Philadelphia, via New York city.  They landed on the very day in 1812 that war was declared by this country against Great Britain, their vessel having been boarded by the officers of a British war ship while in sight of New York.  Had the declaration of war been known to these officials at that time the passengers would have been taken prisoners.  After a short stay in Philadelphia, they moved to Allegheny county, near Pittsburgh, and in 1819 finally settled in this township, and remained here until they died.  John Mehaffey is the only one of their ten children now living.  He married Nancy Murphy in 1826.  John Bingham Mehaffey was their eighth child, and was born in this township in 1831.  He married Margaret Hutchison, daughter of Nathan and Mary Hutchison, in 1863.  She was born here in 1838.  They are childless.  Mr. John B. Mehaffey has held various local offices, and farms one hundred and sixty acres.  He has one of the best farms here. - 488

     JOHN MEHAFFEY was born in Ireland in 1801, and emigrated to this country with his parents in 1812.  In 1819 they removed to this county, where they remained until their death.  In 1826 John Mehaffey married Nancy Murphy, who died here in 1864.  Shortly after her death he removed with his two daughters to Cambridge, where they still reside.  Seven of his ten children are living.  Alexander Mehaffey was born in 1832, and married Caroline Lee, daughter of Samuel and Jane Lee of Knox township, in 1861.  She was born in 1835.  Since their marriage they have lived in Adams township.  Their six children were:  Jenny Lee, John Russell, Clara Bell, Elizabeth Margaret, Annie Laura and Samuel Lee.  Mr. Mehaffey owns one hundred  and eighty-five acres of land. - 488

     WILLIAM SPEER, the fifth child of Stewart and Jane Speer, was born in 1818, and married Anna Jane McKinney in 1841.  His wife was born in 1820.  After marriage they settled on the old homestead, where they now live, surrounded by their family, viz:  Margaret L., Alexander Scott,  Mary Wallace, Mattie Wilson, Matthew McKinney, William Albert, and Clara Bell.  Eliza Jane died Jan. 29, 1871.  Mr. Speer owns one hundred and thirty-seven acres of land.  His son Matthew M. was born in 1854, and married Mary Best in 1875.  She was born in 1855.  After living on a part of his father's farm two years, he purchased the farm formerly owned by his brother, Alexander, and still lives there.  Mr. Speer is postmaster and merchant at Gallagher post-office.  He has two children, William Roy and Frank McGiffin. - 489

     STEWART SPEER was born in Pennsylvania Feb. 8, 1783, and married Jane Scott, of Pennsylvania, a lady four years his junior.  From 1808 to 1812 they kept hotel and farmed in Adams township.  In the War of 1812 he became a lieutenant, and did a patriot's duty, and afterwards became an associate judge.  In March, 1850, he died, and his wife followed in 1866.  They had eight children.  Abraham S. Speer was a son of Stewart and Jane Speer, and was born in 1814.  He married Mary, daughter of John and Mary McKinney, of Westland, in 1836.  Their married life has been spent in Adams township, on or near their present homestead.  Six of their eight children are living, viz.:  Rev. John S., in Pennsylvania; James, William S., and Anna M., wife of James Lorimer live in Kansas; Martin  and Henry.  Four sons fought in the late war.  Mr. Speer owns one hundred and fifty-six acres of land. - 489

     JOHN WORK was born in Fayette county, Pennsylvania, in 1785, and while there he married Nancy McDoll, who was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, in 1788.  They soon removed to her native county, where he died in 1850, and his widow in 1873.  Three of their nine children are living, viz; Joseph, John, and Sarah, widow of Frederick Johnson.  John  was born in 1834, and married Mary Morrison in 1860.  In 1867 they settled in Spencer township near Cumberland, afterwards in Westland, and in 1875 came to Adams township, and purchased part of the McNutt homestead.   Their children are:  Mary, wife of John Nausett; and William and James, twins, who live at home.  Mr. Work has one hundred acres, and is a tiller of the soil. - 489

     ALEXANDER NEELY is the second child of Matthew and Nancy (Woodbury) Neely, natives of Ireland, and was born in 1828 in the mother country.  He and two sisters and a brother left Ireland in 1849, and settled in Adams township, where he took unto himself a wife in 1860.  The bride was a daughter of Martin Keeler of Athens county, and was born in Belmont county in 1839.  They have since lived here and have a family of five children - William, Mary, Nannie, John and Maggie.  Mr. Neely owns one hundred and thirteen acres of good land, and has been supervisor and school director. - 489

     JOHN SUNNAFRANK was born on the island of Guernsey, on the coast of France, in 1777.  He was of German parentage, and left his home for Virginia, where he remained until 1804.  In that year he moved to near Cambridge, and lived eleven years there and at West Cambridge.  He then purchased a fine farm in Adams township, four miles from Cambridge, on the pike and lived there until his death in 1850.  His wife died in 1852.  Jacob, the oldest of his six children, was born in Virginia in 1801.  In 1823 he married Margaret, daughter of Solomon Adams, of Adams township.   She was born in 1803, and died in 1877.  Her children were John, Absalom (now dead), Eliza J., Levi, and LiviniaMr. Sunnafrank cleared the land where he now lives.  He owns five hundred and ninety-six acres, and leads a retired life, being four score years old. - 489

     MRS. MARY HUTCHINSON is the daughter of Robert Bell and Margaret Ferguson.  Her father was born in county Donegal, Ireland, in 1781.  He came with his parents to Pennsylvania, and in 1807 removed to Ohio, and married.  His wife was born in Ireland in 1787.  After four years residence in Jefferson county, and a short stay in Cambridge, they moved to Adams township, where he died in 1831, and his wife in 1863.  Four of their eight children are living - Agnes, Margaret, James, and Mary.  The latter was born in Jefferson county in 1808, and was married to Nathan Hutchinson in 1830.  Her husband's parents were Joseph and Elizabeth Hutchinson, and he was born in Loudoun county, Virginia, in 1805.  His father having died his mother went to Cambridge with her little family.  When Nathan married he located here, and died in 1849.  His children were Robert B., Elizabeth, Joseph W., Margaret F., David W., Agnes J., Andrew P., and Mary M.  Mrs. Ferguson's grandfather, John Ferguson, was a colonel in the rebel army in Ireland, and emigrated to save his life. - 489

     ALEXANDER LEEPER was born in the State of Pennsylvania in 1773, and his wife in 1777.  In the year 1831 they made their home on the pike in Adams township, near Cambridge.  In 1853 his good wife died, and he followed her in 1858.  Their children were Mary, widow of William Ragan, of Illinois; William of Illinois; Eliza, wife of James Bradley, of Nebraska; Ellen, wife of Robert Snodgrass, lives in Nebraska; John James, lives in Iowa; Samuel, Robert, and Margaret, dead.  Alexander, the eighth child, was born in 1823, and married Isabelle Lathers in 1855, when she was twenty-eight years old.  They have two children - Sarah and Samuel Thomas.  He farms one hundred and sixty acres. - 490

     ISAAC CONDEN was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, in 1797, and twenty-four years later married Esther Nelson, who was two years his junior.  They lived in Washington county until his death, in 1865.  She died in 1877.  Their five children were:  Lillie Ann, now Mrs. Robert Thompson; John, Martha, and Margaret, in Pennsylvania; and James N., who was born in 1835.  In 1861 Miss Violet, daughter of William Glass, of Pennsylvania, who was born in 1835, became Mrs. Conden.  The next four years they resided near Concord and then moved to Adams township.  Their three children are, Martha Lillie, Bell Nelson, and Willie Patterson, all at home.  Mr. Conden has two hundred and ninety-seven acres of land.  He has served as township treasurer two years, and also held other township offices. - 490

     WILLIAM CALHOUN was born in Ireland June 10, 1796, and came to Green county, Pennsylvania, in 1818.  Four years later he moved to Washington county, and while there married Ruth Clark, who was born in 1795.  In 1845 they began a five years' residence in Westmoreland county, and in 1850 settled in Adams township, where he died in 1871, and his wife in 1881.  Their eight children were:  John, Maria, Jane, Rebecca, Ruth, Andrew, William, and Elizabeth.  John was born in 1824 and married Mrs. Matilda J. Morrow in 1875.  She was born in 1832.  Her first husband was Daniel B. Morrow, by whom she had one child - Charles E.  They live on the homestead.  Mr. Calhoun owns one hundred and ninety-three acres; he has held various offices in the township. - 490

     DAVID THOMPSON  and Sarah Gordon, an Irish lad and lass, were born in the old country - he in 1774 and she in 1780.  Six years after their wedding feast they began an eighteen years residence in Alleghany county, Pennsylvania.  The vicinity of New Concord, Muskingum county, then became their abiding place, until 1817, when their final settlement was made in Adams township.  In 1847 she passed away and in 1859 he joined the "great majority."  Their children are:  Jane, Sarah, David Glenn, and Andrew.  Andrew was born in Pennsylvania in 1809, and married Nancy, daughter of Silas and Elizabeth Burt, in 1833.  She was born in 1813.  They took charge of the homestead farm until 1840, and then moved to Coshocton county.  In 1847 they returned and purchased the homestead, and Mrs. Thompson died there in 1881.  The children were:  Silas, David, Elizabeth Jane, wife of Joseph Scott, and Sarah Margaret, wife of John B. Scott; Mary Ann, wife of Charles Draper; Nancy Ellen, wife of James Bell; Amanda Walker, wife of John Trace;  and George MitchellMr. Thompson is a retired farmer and owns one hundred and sixty acres. - 490

     JOHN HANCOCK was born in Somersetshire, England, in 1780 and sought an American home in 1832.  Sarah Launders, an English lady, thirty-nine years old, became Mrs. John Hancock in 1833.  After a short residence in Muskingum county they made their permanent home in Westland township, where he died in 1869, and she in 1874.  Their children were:  Francis, Keziah, wife of E. M. Sigfred, of Cambridge; William, and one deceased.  Francis, born in 1834, married Elizabeth McNutt in 1863.  She was a daughter of Joseph and Agnes McNutt, of Adams township, and the same age as her husband.  After two years of life on the McNutt homestead, they lived in Westland ten years and then moved here.  They are childless.  Mr. Hancock owns sixty-seven acres of good farming land.  - 490

     BENJAMIN REASONER  is a native of Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, where he was born in 1799.  When quite young his parents, John and Elizabeth Reasoner, moved to Westland township, where Benjamin wooed and won Anna Wilson, daughter of Thomas Wilson, who was born in Alleghany county, Pennsylvania, in 1807.  They went to housekeeping in Adams township, where the husband and father died in 1872, having survived his wife one year.  The children are: Elizabeth, wife of John Hurley; Margaret, William, and Martha.  William Reasoner was born in Adams township in 1840, and married Ellen Hurley in 1865.  His wife is six years younger than himself.  They have since lived on the homestead, where their children - Wilson, Annie Mary, Ida Bell, and Charles Henry, receive their personal affection.  Mr. Reasoner is a general farmer.  His wife is a daughter of Cornelius and Mary Hurley, of Cambridge township. - 491

     VALENTINE SHIRER, the father of Lydia E. Shirer, was born in Somerset, Pennsylvania, in 1797.  In 1805 he came to Ohio with his parents, they settling in Muskingum county, where they remained until their death.  In 1823 he was united in marriage to Esther Gaumer, who was born in Muskingum county in 1807.  They remained on the old homestead until his death, which occurred in 1881.  To Mr. and Mrs. Shirer were born eleven children, of whom nine are living, viz:  Nettie, widow of John Lacy; Lydia E.; Eliza Jane, wife of Josiah Vincent; Winnie A., wife of William Leydig, of Kansas; Daniel G. living in Muskingum county; Hannah A. and Green R., at home; Kate M., wife of Samuel W. Sutton; and Sydney.  Lydia E. was born in 1832, and in 1857 was married to William P. Bell, who was born in 1832 and died in the civil war in 1864.  To Mr. and Mrs. Bell were born four children, viz.:  Harley W., deceased; Mary E. and Ellsworth T., living in Muskingum county; and Annie E. wife of Benjamin H. Kerr.  After the death of her husband, Mrs. Bell married Watson Kerr, in the year 1878, who was born in 1813.  In 1881 he was killed by the cars.  They had five children, viz.:  Isaac W., the oldest, deceased; Robert H., living in Belmont county; Martha, wife of G. J. Dorrell, at Cambridge;  Thomas, living at Cambridge; and Benjamin H., who is living in the old homestead.- 491

     WILLIAM McCULLEY  was born in 1800.  His parents came to this country when William was quite young, and settled in Pennsylvania, where they remained until their family was almost grown.  They then came to this State and lived in Noble, and Muskingum, finally settling in Guernsey county, Knox township, where they died.  Their family consisted of seven children:  William, who married Jane Corden, she being born in the year 1805.  After their marriage they settled in Noble county, where they remained but a short time, then removed to Guernsey county, Knox township.  They then removed to Muskingum county, where Mr. McCulley died in the year 1845.  Mrs. McCulley is still living with her son Matthew.  Their family consisted of six children:  John; Samuel who lives in Muskingum county; Maria, wife of John Reynolds who lives in Knox township; and Martha, living on the old homestead.  John, the oldest child, was born in 1844.  In 1867 he was united in marriage to Nancy Wells, she being the only living child of Samuel and Emily Wells.  To Mr. and Mrs. McCulley were born five children:  Emily, Jennie, Anna Laura, William Wells, and Jessie May.  Mrs. McCulley's father, Samuel Wells, was born in 1801, and her mother, Emily (Stoddard) Wells was born in 1803.  After their marriage they settled in Guernsey county, Adams township, where they remained until their death, he dying in 1879 and she in 1865.  Their family consisted of two children:  Emily, wife of William Condon, deceased; and Nancy, who, with her husband, lives on her father's homestead.  - 491

     ELLIS KELLEY's father, Joseph, was born in Virginia in 1797, and was brought by his parents to Muskingum county in 1809.  He there married Sarah Houseman, and had a family of three children, viz.: John, living in Westland township; Hannah wife of Rev. J. J. Jackson, of Iowa; and Ellis.  Ellis was born in 1827, and married Martha Smith, in 1852.  His wife was born in 1828 and died in 1864.  In 1875 he married Jenny Finsley, daughter of Samuel Finsley, of Richland township, who was born in 1828.  They removed from Westland township to the pike in Adams, near Cambridge, where they now live.  Their children are: William, James, Frank, Lyman, Effie, Ettie, and JohnMr. Kelly owns two hundred and thirty-five acres and is an extensive farmer.  - 491

     ANN MILLIGAN is the daughter of James Milligan, who was born in Pennsylvania in 1790.  Her mother, Ellen Grimes, was born in Pennsylvania.  Her mother, Ellen Grimes,  was born in Pennsylvania in 1774.  In 1834 Mr. and Mrs. Milligan moved to Muskingum county, Ohio, where they died.  In life they were united, and in death were not divided, for both died in 1850.  Of their eleven children, Jerva is in Indiana; Ellen is the wife of Andrew Hurl; Susan is the wife of James Scott, of Muskingum county; James lives in Indiana, and Ann lives on the farm formerly occupied by John RossAnn Milligan was born in 1820. - 491
