JOHN OWENS
was born in Wales, Nov. 12, 1773.
When seven years old he settled in Sherman's Valley, near
Waterford, Pennsylvania, and in 1844 he came here.
This township has since been his home, save for a few years
that he lived in Trumbull county. In 1813 he married
Elizabeth, daughter of Jacob Beaver. She
was born on Dec. 4, 1793, and had ten children, viz: John
B., Daniel, Sarah A., William, Samuel B., David T., James
B., Margaret N., Eliza, and J. W. Owens. J. W.
Owens was born in 1836, on February 22d, in Trumbull
county. In 1844 he came here permanently. On
Oct. 9, 1872, he married Cynthia E., daughter of
John Gallaher. She was born in 1845, and her
children are: Sally M., William F.,
John G., and Luella M. Mr. Owens owns two
hundred and thirty-eight acres of land and is a farmer,
prosperous and contented. He has held local offices.
ROBERT VANCE
was born in Maryland in 1791. He spent part of his
youth in Washington County, Pennsylvania, and came to this
township in 1825. Before coming here he married
Catharine Dailey, who was born in 1798. Her father
was named Nathan. This couple had twelve
children, viz.: Betsey, Polly, Martha, Robert,
Daily, Kate, Margaret, Ellen, John, Lucretia, Adaline,
and Lydia A. Robert Vance, Jr., was born on the
homestead in 1823 and has resided here ever since. In
1845 he married Eliza J. Campbell, daughter of
Jesse Campbell. She was born in 1822, and gave
birth to eight children: William, Jesse and
Robert (twins), Martha and Mary C.
(twins), Alice J., Jasper S., and Margaret.
Mr. Vance owns forty-eight acres and is a stock raiser.
MR. LONGWORTH'S
father
BASIL was born in Montgomery county, Maryland, in 1795,
and married Elizabeth Boyer, who was born in 1800.
Their eleven children were named: Lucy, Mary,
Elizabeth, Peter, William, Basil N., John W., Cornelius S.,
Jesse T., Nancy C., and Cordelia R. In 1826
they settled in Washington township, and in 1853 Basil
Longworth died. He held various local offices.
His son William was born in Montgomery county,
Maryland, in 1825, and came here with his parents in 1826.
In 1852 he married Julia A. Sheppard, daughter of
Peter Sheppard. Their only child, John C.,
born in 1853, is married and living at home. His wife
was Florence E., daughter of William and Jane
Lemon, born in 1853 and married in 1876. Their
children were: F. Gertrude and Edna M.
Mr. William Longworth is an influential farmer and has
held various township offices. His wife died in this
township in 1857, and he married Sarah A., daughter
of John Owen. She was born in Trumbull county,
Ohio, in 1821.
JOHN D.
HARDING was born in Maryland in
1797, and came to Smithfield when quite young. In 1821
he married Margaret Thompson, by whom he had two
children, viz.: David T., and Martha.
In 1826 he married Martha Chaney, daughter of
Charles Chaney, who was twenty-one years old. By
her he had seven children, viz.: Charles, Margaret,
Sarah, Malissa, George W., Basil L., and John.
George W. was born in 1834, and has always lived here.
He married Highly Ann, daughter of John Decker,
in 1858, who is five years his junior. Their two
children are: David T. and John D.
In 1866 he married Sarah, daughter of Joseph Watt,
by whom he has had three children, viz: Martha M.,
George R., and Joseph H.
LOUIS
B. KINGSBURY was born in St.
Mary's, Dorset county, England, May 15, 1787. On May
9, 1819, he set sail for Baltimore, Maryland, and landed
there on July 6th. In 1827 he married Nancy Read,
a widow, who was born in Norfolk county, Virginia, in 1804.
By her he had four children, viz.: Sarah Ann,
James R., Thomas H., and Mary B. Mr.
Kingsbury was justice of the peace fifteen years.
His son Thomas H. was born May 12, 1822, at his
present home. He has always been a farmer, and has
raised considerable stock of all kinds. He was
township trustee for three years. He owns one hundred
and twenty acres of land, and has a fine farm. His
mother had three children by her first husband, James
Read, viz.: George, John, and Jesse E.
GEORGE FRAZIER
was born in Maryland in 1786. In 1795
he moved to Trumbull county, Ohio, and in 1837 he settled on
section thirteen of Washington township, remaining there
until he died. In 1816 he married Bathiah Randall,
daughter of William Randall, who was born in 1795.
By her he had thirteen children, viz.: Hugh A., Sarah,
William J., Rebecca A., Hannah, Henry, William H., Sarah R.,
Elizabeth, George, Israel, Andrew, and Asa.
George Frazier, Jr., was born in 1830 in Trumbull
county, and in 1837 he came to this township. In 1867
he married Eliza Dunal, daughter of Abner Dunal,
who was born in 1841. They had four children, viz.:
Hattie M., Hannah B., Hugh R., and Georgie A.
Mr. Frazier served three years and two months in the
army during the war of the Rebellion, and with the exception
of this time has been engaged in farming, and now owns one
of the finest farms (of one hundred and sixty acres) in the
township, and gives particular attention to the raising of
stock.
JOHN W. SPENCER
was born in Maryland Oct. 7, 1783, and Feb.
27, 1806, married Amelia Bright, daughter of Levi
Bright, who was born June 26, 1781. By her Mr.
Spencer had eleven children, viz.: Mary, David,
Catharine, Joel W., Levi B., Sarah, Hannah, Amelia,
John, Nathan, and Rachel. Nathan was
born Mar. 18, 1824, on the homestead here. On
Apr. 22, 1847, he married Sarah Grear, daughter of
William and Matilda Grear. She was born in
Virginia Aug. 27, 1826. They had seven children, viz.:
John W., William A., Matilda, Washington G., Virlinda,
Allie, and Maggie J. He owns one hundred
and sixty-two acres, and is a farmer. His land was
entered by his father in 1813.
LEVI WILLIAMS
was born in Virginia, near Winchester, in 1777. In
1796 he settled at Stillwater, Belmont county, Ohio, and
moved where the town of Washington now stands, in 1800, and
did the first clearing on that site. In 1799 he and
Hannah Lemon were married. She was born in
Virginia in 1782. They have had eight children, viz.:
Ellen, John, Levi, George, Heslip, and three who died
in infancy. John Williams was born on Mar. 8,
1806, in this township, and has lived here ever since.
On Feb. 27, 1832, he married Edey Hindes, daughter of
Moses Hindes. She was also born in 1806, Nov.
7. Their children were: Hugh McFarland, John
H., Mary Edey, and one who died in infancy. He
owns sixty-five acres and has held local offices. His
father helped cut the road from Wheeling to Zanesville
before the National road was begun.
JAMES READ
was born in Jefferson county, in 1796, and married Nancy
Reeves, daughter of James Reeves, in 1820, who
was born in Norfolk county, Virginia, in 1799. Their
three children were named John, George, and Jesse.
George was born here in 1821, and has lived here since.
In 1844 he married Martha Harding, daughter of
John D. Harding. She was born in 1822. Their
children were: John D., Nancy C., and Martha
A. Mr. George Read owns one hundred and fifty
acres of land. He has held local offices, and is a
stock raiser and farmer. After his father's death his
mother married Louis B. Kingsbury, and had four
children - Sarah A., James R., Thomas H., and Mary
B.
OLIVER GRIMSLEY
was born in Culpeper county, Virginia, in 1801, and while
there he married Miss Cunningham, a daughter of
Abijah Cunningham. Their two children were named
Mary F. and William F. His second wife
was Dulphy Delaney, daughter of Thomas Kendall,
who was born in 1800, in Culpeper county Virginia. By
her he had five children - Silas L., Benjamin,
Daniel A. J., one who died in infancy, and Sarah A.
Silas L. was born in Culpeper county, Virginia, Oct. 12,
1828. One year later he was brought by his parents to
their new home in Belmont county, and remained there until
1857, when he settled here. In 1851 he married
Evaline Bevans, daughter of Samuel and
Eliza Bevans, who was born in Belmont county
in 1833. Their children were named: Otho S.
B., Thomas M., Eliza M., Viola D., Hattie and Eva L.
(twins), Ada F., Mary W., and one not named.
Mr. Grimsley owns eighty-two acres. He was
a blacksmith until lately, and is now a farmer. He has
been justice of the peace nine years, school director twenty
years, and is an influential man. |
