     The following is a list of the residents of Westland township seventy-six years of age and upwards in 1876: 

     William R. Stewart, Thomas J. Freeman, Ephraim Barnett, Mary Burnett, Susan Galloway, Joseph Kelly, Elijah Wycoff, Mary Wycoff, John Hammond, James Sterling, J. Amspoker, Mrs. Wilson, R. R. Moore, Thomas E. Conner, W. B. Crawford, Mr. Best, Maria White, James Lawrence, Mrs. Sterling.

     JOHN HARTONG, son of Christian and Polly Hartong, was born in Pennsylvania in 1808.  In 1l835 he married Ruth Terril, daughter of Daniel and Jane Terril.  His wife was born in Virginia in 1806, and died in 1875.  In 1836 they removed to Center Township, and afterwards to Westland, where he still lives.  To them were born five children:  Daniel Thompson, Mary Ann, Margaret Jane, Jeremiah Terril, and William Giffin.  All of them still live to bless their father's heart in his old age.  Margaret Jane married Jane Duff; and Daniel Thompson married Lizzie Hartong, and lives in Adams township.  Mr. Hartong owns a good farm of one hundred and sixty acres, and is a general farmer, and one of the substantial men of the township.  His daughter Mary Ann is the wife of John Forsythe, of this township, and his son, Jeremiah Terril, is at home.

     WILLIAM CRAIG was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, Dec. 29, 1809.  His father, Robert Craig, and his mother, Catharine Johnson Craig, came to this country from Ireland in 1805.  In 1823 the Craigs removed to Richhill township, Muskingum county, Ohio, and William remained there until 1832.  While there he married Nancy Crawford, who died in 1842, after giving birth to seven children, viz.:  Mary Jane, Eli, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Sarah Ann, Israel, and Euphemia, who was born in 1836 and died in 1844.  Mary Jane married James Leadman; Eli was born in 1831 and died in 1844; Elizabeth married Andrew Johnson; Sarah Ann was born in 1838 and died in 1844; Rebecca married Joshua Burns, and Israel was born and died in 1842.  In 1843 Mr. Craig married Mary Murphy, who was born in 1814.  By his last wife he had ten children, viz: John, Rachel E., Martha, Margaret, William, Caroline, Anna M., Samantha, Ava and Morgan who was born in April 1849, and died in April, 1852.  Rachel died in 1851, aged six.  Margaret and Martha, the deceased twins, were born in 1847.  Anna M., Samantha and Caroline, are dead.

     JOSEPH KELLY was born in Virginia in 1801.  His parents, John and Elizabeth Kelly, moved to Muskingum county, Ohio, in 1815, bringing young Joseph with them.  Like all the early dwellers in the Ohio forest he found it impossible to keep house without a wife, and therefore married Sarah Houseman in 1826.  Their three children were named:  Ellis, John, and Hannah.  Ellis lives three miles from Columbus; Hannah married the Rev. John Jackson, now stationed at East Plainfield, and John lives adjoining his father's house, near Claysville.  In1851 Mr. Kelly married a second time.  His second wife was Mrs. Eleanor Martin, who was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, in 1817.  No children were born to them, and Mrs. Martin's two children, by her former husband, are dead.  Her maiden name was Gambrill.  Her father's name was Patton Gambrill, and her mother's name was Martha.  Mr. Kelly settled where he now lives in 1844.  He has one hundred and forty-two acres of land and is a retired farmer.

     JONAS AMSPOKER, the second son of John and Mary Amspoker, was born in Brooke county, Virginia, in 1807.  He lived in his native State for more than a half century, and in 1859, being in robust health, concluded that he was not too old to transplant, so he came to Ohio and settled in Westland township, where he still lives, healthy and happy, though past he allotted years of man.  He married Mary Ann Daugherty, a Pennsylvanian, born in 1814.  They had six children, viz:  Mrs. Isabel Marshall, in Westland; William C., Jonas D., and Albert, at home; James D., at Cambridge, and one now deceased.  Mr. Amspoker owns two hundred and sixty acres, which are farmed by William C., and Jonas William C. married Mary M. Swank, of Muskingum.  Their children are:  Carlos Lee, Wilbur Odell (deceased),  Mary Bessie, and Harry B.  A shower of meteoric stones fell on this farm in 1860, four of which were found.

     NATHANIEL HINES was born in Virginia in 1809.  In 1823 young Hines and his mother began a residence of twenty-four years in Coshocton county, Ohio.  There he was married to Delilah Belford in 1830.  She was born in 1806.  They had six children, viz:  William, Mrs. Israel Bell, of Muskingum county; John born in 1836, died in 1857; Mrs. Gilbert Gear, in Muskingum county; Mrs. J. Jacob Galligher, who lives at Sandusky.  Mr. Hines is engaged in farming and raising sheep.

     BENJAMIN MARSHALL.  Benjamin, son of Robert and Polly (Reasoner) Marshall, was born in Guernsey county in 1837.  His parents were natives of Pennsylvania, his father being born there in 1792, and his mother in 1801.  This couple were married here in 1818, one year after the senior Marshall came to this townships.  Nine children were born to them, viz:  Elilzabeth Reasoner, now in Illinois; Martha, wife of Samuel Marshall, of Illinois; Nancy, wife of W. M. Galbreath, and living in Illinois; Jane, wife of John McKinney, of Pennsylvania; John Reasoner, in Iowa.  Robert Wilson, Joseph, Benjamin, Nancy, John, and Joseph are dead.  Benjamin married Bell P. Amspoker in 1865.  He was then twenty-eight years old, and Mrs. Amspoker was born in Pennsylvania twenty-four years previous.  Their five children were named:  Mary, Bell, Joseph, Lulu Augusta, and Lillian EvaMr. Marshall owns two hundred acres, and has greatly improved his place.  He was township trustee for twelve years.

     MICHAEL ARCHER, the father of Andrew, was born in Pennsylvania in 1798.   By his wife, Margaret Collins, who died in 1826, he had seven children, three of whom are still living, viz.: Nancy, wife of Caleb Lincicum, who lives in Indiana; Hannah, wife of Andrew Burchett; and Andrew, who was born in this county in 1824.  In 1850 Andrew married Sarah, daughter of William and Jane Smith.  This lady was born in Muskingum county in 1828.  By her he had three children, viz:  Chalmer, now living in Muskingum county, two miles north of Concord; Margaret Jane, and William live at home.  Mr. Archer is a tiller of the soil, and at present rents and is farming the Quinn farm of one hundred and seventy-seven acres.

     WILLIAM GALLIGHER, a stalwart son of Ireland, died in 1869, having just reached the three score years and ten allotted for man's existence.  He was a son of John and Mary Galligher, and married Nancy McKiney in 1829.  This lady was born in Westland in 1808 and died in 1880.  Their children were;  Mary Wilson, born in 1830 and died in 1835; Rachel Ann wife of Samuel Hines, died in 1873; John McKinney, who resides in Xenia; Hannah Jane, wife of Robert Wilson Marshall; Mattie, at home; and William Alexander.   The latter was born in this township in 1845, and married Irene Stewart in 1874.  Miss Stewart was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin, in 1855.  To this couple were born two children:  Wilber Demott, born in 1876; and Homer Clare, born in 1878.  Mr. Galligher's homestead fronts on the National road near the Muskingum county line.

     LEWIS CAIUS McDONALD was one of the first children born in Westland township, for his birth in 1871 was in the infancy of the settlement.  In 1842 he married Melissa Boyd, and had five children, viz.: John W., who lives at Concord; Mira L., and Rachel A., at home; Samantha J., wife of Nathan Conner, lives at Claysville, Ohio; and William L., at home.  Mr. McDonald has held the office of supervisor several terms.  His wife was born in 1822, and died in 1869.

     MRS. JANE BEST, the third child of James and Nancy Irwin, old residents of Washington county, Pennsylvania, was born in 1826.  In 1845 she became the wife of John Best, who was born in her native county - Washington county, Pennsylvania, in 1820.  In 1850 the Bests emigrated to Westland township, where Mr. Best died in 1880.  Their children were:  James Irwin, William C., Nancy Martha, wife of George W. McEwen; Samuel, John Marcus, Benjamin Weddle, Sarissa Jane, Alice Bell, Mary Ann, and Adaline.  The two last are deceased.  Mrs. Best's farm of one hundred and ninety acres is well managed by her sons, William, John and Benjamin.

     ROBERT R. MOORE is the son of William Moore, who was born in Ireland in 1791.  When but four years of age the parents of William Moore emigrated to this country.  After twenty-four years' residence in Pennsylvania he made his home in Wills township for eighteen months, and then moved to Perry county, where he spent his last days dying in 1856.  His wife, Isabella Rodgers, a Pennsylvania lady, was born in 1793.  Nine children call them mother and father - Martha, wife of Robert N. Moore; Margaret, now John McBroom's widow; Susannah, widow of John  Musterd; Sarah, wife of Levi Longstreth; Mary J., widow of McCoucy Moore; James and Isabelle, twins now deceased; William and Robert R.  The last-named was born in Pennsylvania in 1810.  IN 1843 he moved from Perry county to Westland, his present home.  Miss Ellen McClary became his wife in 1840.  She was born in Perry county in 1818.  Their seven children were:  Isabella, now Mrs. David Yan; Margaret, now Mrs. Cyrus McKee; Jane now Mrs. Samuel Harper; Mary Ellen, William, Catharine, and Rev. Samuel J.  Mr. Moore possesses one hundred and fifty-two acres, and is a general farmer.

     WILLIAM BENNETT was born in Ireland in 1801, and emigrated to Pennsylvania when eighteen years of age.  He married Christina Miller, daughter of Henry Miller, and spent the first four years of his wedded life in Union township, Muskingum county, Ohio.  In 1838 he made his final home in Westland township, and died there in 1842.  His wife remained a widow for thirty-four years, and died in 1876.  They had eleven children - John, Henry, James Dunlap, Eliza Ann, Matilda Jane, William, Mary, Matthew, Johnston Miller, David Campbell, and Margaret.  John Bennet was born in Pennsylvania, in 1821.  He came to Ohio with his parents, and in 1852 married Elizabeth Boyd.  She died in the year 1869.  In 1870 he married Sarah Anderson of Muskingum county, who was born in Pennsylvania in 1837.  He has had no children.  He owns one hundred and thirty-seven acres, and raises sheep.  He has lived in his present home since 1840.

     McCREARY GEORGE was born on his present farm in Westland township in 1825.  His father,  George McCreary, Sr., was born in Ireland in 1790, and emigrated to America in 1812.  In 1823 he married Sarah Mills, daughter of John Mills, of Wheeling.  His wife's father was a soldier in the War of 1812.  Mrs. McCreary was born in 1793.  This couple settled in Westland township, where they passed their lives.  Mrs. McCreary died in 1847, and her husband in 1873.  Their seven children were: Johnb, Jane, Elizabeth, Henry, and George, living; Andrew and Mitchell dead.  Elizabeth S. Rankin, now Mrs. George McCreary, was born in Westland township in 1832, and became his wife in 1861.

     EPHRAIM BARNETT was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, in 1801, and married Sarah Bell in 1829, who was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, in 1808.  They came to Ohio and settled in Westland township in April, 1839.  Mr. Barnett died in the fall of 1879, at the old home farm where his widow is still living with her son Ephraim  They had eleven children, but three of whom are now living.  James Knox, their eldest child, was born on  Jan. 10, 1830, in Washington county, Pennsylvania, and married Elizabeth Henderson who was born in Harrison County, Ohio, on Jan. 21, 1828.  They have six children - Mary A., Walter B., William H., Sarah, Robert G., and James Knox, Jr. who is living in Cambridge, Ohio, where he is doing a general blacksmithing business.  John Bell Barnett was born in 1841, in this county, and is living in Bradiwood1, Illinois.  Ephraim Ross Barnett was born in Guernsey county in 1849, and in 1873 married Margaret Johnson.  This lady was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, in 1852.  They have four children, all living- Francis E., Charles J., Gertrude, and Walter B. Barnett.4

     OLIVER BARNETT's father and mother, John  and Mary Thompson Barnett, were born in Pennsylvania in 1796.  In 1847 they came to Ohio and settled in Westland township, where he engaged in farming until his death in 1858.  His wife survived until 1877.  They had seven children, viz.: Ephraim, Jane, William, John, Josiah, Oliver, and Joseph A.  Josiah is dead; Oliver was born in 1834, and married Maggie E. Boyd in 1856.  She was a daughter of Samuel Boyd of Westland township, and born in 1834.  He farmed here and in Muskingum county until 1861.  From that year until 1865 he helped defend the country, and then lived in Pittsburgh until 1878, when he returned here.  His only child was a daughter named Bertha M., who was born in 1872, and died in 1874.  Mr. Barnett owns two hundred and twenty-five acres of land and is profitably engaged in raising stock and tilling the soil.

     WILLIAM B. STEWART, an only son, is one of the hardy natives of Ireland who have given their best years to America, the land of their adoption.  Oct. 26, 1804, was his birthday.  In 1830 he landed at Baltimore and immediately proceeded to Pennsylvania.  There he remained until 1832, when he moved to Oxford townships, Guernsey county.  From 1835 5o 1872 he led a wandering life, and then permanently located where he now lives in Westland township, at the county line, just off the National road.  He was married three times; first in 1826 to Allice Jameson, who died on April 6, 1842, leaving him three children, viz.:  Jane, wife of John C. Wier; Mary, wife of Adam Clark and Sarah Ellen, wife of John R. Forsythe.  In 1843 he married Jane Bingham who was born in his native land in 1801, and died on Sept. 29, 1865.  In 1866 he married  his present wife, Isabella Isaac, then the widow of William R. Isaac.  This lady was born in Ireland in 1818.  By her he had two children, viz: Sarah Jane, at home, and William A., who died.  Mr. Stewart owns three hundred acres and is a retired farmer.

     JOSEPH MORSE THOMPSON was born in Jefferson county, Ohio, in 1808.  When seventeen years old he went to Columbiana county, Ohio, and remained there three years.  After a year spent in wandering he, in 1829, married Margaret Vandermark, who was born in 1812, in this County.  The seven children of this couple  were:  Joshua Redding, living in Westland; Henry Safford, in Morgan county; Christina, wife of John Ritchey; Esther Maria, wife of Henry Holland, of Franklin county; John Bernard, married to Lucinda Gregory, and now in Muskingum county; Joseph, in Perry county; and Jonathan, at home.  These children are all living.  Mr. Thompson is a farmer and mason.  His father was Joshua Thompson, of Fayette county, Pennsylvania, and his mother was Sarah Morse, of the same county.

     HORATIO GRUMMAN, was the son of Isaac Grumman, who settled in Westland township when the adjacent territory was so thinly populated that each settler almost led the life of a hermit.  Isaac Grumman was born in New Jersey in 1777.  those were troublous times typical of his coming struggles in the Western wilds.  When he had reached manhood's estate, in 1798, he married Jemima Price, born at Newark, New Jersey, in 1775.  In 1804 they removed near Fort Henry, now Wheeling, West Virginia, and in 1806 they came to Westland township, where they remained until the sun of their life slowly sank among old Guernsey's hills.  The husband died in 1845, and his wife in 1858.  Three of their nine children live, viz.:  Phoebe; Mary, wife of James McDonald; and Horatio.  Horatio was born in 1812, in Westland township, and virtually on the very spot where he is now spending the shady side of his life.  In 1853 he and Mary J. McClurg were made man and wife.  Miss McClurg was born in full view of the Natural Bridge in Virginia, in 1821.  This couple have spent their wedded life in Westland township.  Their children were named: Charles H., Horace E., Victor W., and Jessie B.  The senior Grumman represented this district in the Legislature.
