The father of JOHN DOWNER
was born in Washington
county, Pennsylvania, in 17y90, and came to Guernsey county
in 1813. He entered the farm he now owns and with much
labor cleared it of the dense woods that encumbered it.
The hills and valleys, rich with their store of waving wheat
or rustling corn, the large number of substantial, and often
luxuriant homes, and the general air of thrift to be seen in
almost every portion of the county, have nothing to remind
the chance visitant of the dangers and hardships which the
first settlers here, the brave pioneers, were called upon to
endure. This sturdy man found a suitable helpmeet for
frontier life in Elizabeth Work, who was born
in Pennsylvania in 1805. He had twelve children.
John was born in 1818, and has spent his whole life
here. He married Elizabeth, daughter of
Joseph Barrett, in 1856. Their children are:
Frank B., Clyde H., and Ida M. He owns
two handed and sixty-one acres, and has been a township
official.

Armaugh also. Their ten children were named:
George, John, James, Mary, Francis, Catharine, Joseph,
