  MRS. MARTHA A. GILBERT - daughter of David and Betsey (Foote) Butler, was born Dec. 16, 1820, in New Haven county, Conn.  Her husband, Jacob C., son of James and Ruth (Conkey) Gilbert, was born in Vermont, Oct. 5, 1807.  They were married in Portage county, Ohio, Jan. 1, 1838, and settled in this county in 1858.  They have had eight children, four of whom are living: Lucius B., born Nov. 2, 1838, dead; Lucian D., Sept. 22, 1849, dead; Rufus E., Feb. 21, 1844; Martha J., Aug. 20, 1847, dead; Mary E., Aug. 9, 1849; Sarah A., July 30, 1854, dead; Ida M., Sept. 15, 1859; Prosper L., July 6, 1863.  Her husband has been township assessor and clerk.  Her grandfather, Matthew Butler, served in the Revolutionary war seven years; also her father, David Butler who was stationed on Long Island.  Her son, Rufus, served three years in the war of the Rebellion, and participated in the battles of Resacca and Atlanta.  He enlisted as a private in the One Hundred and Eighteenth O. V. I., and served to the close of the war.  Occupation, farming.

  WILLIAM GUFFY - who came with his parents, John and Nancy (Pennington) Guffy, to this county in 1831, was born in Franklin county, Ohio, Nov. 22, 18_6.  His wife, Mary A., daughter of Samuel R. and Elizabeth (Turner) Jacobs, was born in Champaign county, Ohio, Aug. 18, 1817, and they were married in Allen county, Ohio, Mar. 17, 1834.  They have had ten children, of whom seven are living: Samuel R., born Sept. 26, 1835, living in Kansas; Isaac M., Mar. 12, 1837, died September, 1837; Elizabeth J., Aug. 20, 1838, lives in this county; Alexander, May 8, 1840, died Mar. 5, 1865; Mary A., Mar. 5, 1842, lives in this county; George W., Aug. 18, 1844, lives in Kansas; James J., Jan. 22, 1847, living in this county; Sarah M., Sept. 28, 1851, living in this county; Louise A., Nov. 30, 1853, living in this county; Martha E., Apr. 26, 1860, died Jan. 8, 1865.  His father served in the war of 1812, and his sons, Samuel and Alexander, in  the war of the Rebellion, the latter being taken prisoner and dying in hospital.  His wife died Nov. 8, 1864.  Occupation, farming.
