  HENRY C. SCHROEDER - whose parents, John H. and Katherina M. (Hohenbrink) Schroeder, came to this county in 1834, was born in 1852.  His wife, Anna J., daughter of Herman H. and Mary (Kottenbrock) Recker, was born in this county in 1858.  Her father came to the county in 1835, and her mother in 1838.  Mr. Schroeder and his wife were married Oct. 22, 1879.  He is a farmer, and his address is Glendorf, Ohio.

  JOHN HENRY SCHROEDER, JR. - was born in this county, in 1847.  His parents, John H. and Katharina M. (Hohenbrink) Schroeder, came to this county in 1834.  His wife, Mary E. C., whose parentes, John F., and Maria B. (Wilberding) Kahle, settled here in 1833, was born in 1859.  They were married Apr. 25, 1877, and two children bless the union; Mary C., born Jan. Jan. 30, 1878, and Bernardine M. T., Ot. 6, 1879.  Occupation, farming.

  MRS. JOHN HENRY SCHROEDER - whose maiden name was Katarina M. Hohenbrink, a daughter of John W. and Christina (Pues) Hohenbrink, was born in the German Empire in 1820.  She settled with her parents in this county in 1834.  They were married in 1846, and her husband died Nov. 28, 1875.  His occupation was farming.  They have had a family of thirteen children, all of whom are living, with the exception of two: John H. was born June 27 1847; Mary L., July 30, 1848; John W., Dec. 7, 1849; Henry Ch., Jan. 12, 1852; Mary Ann, Sept. 15, 1853 - all residing in Putnam county; Theresa M., Oct. 15, 1854; Matthias, Jan. 1, 1858; Clara M., Dec. 7, 1857, died Dec. 23, 1876; Doretta M., Apr. 8, 1859; Katharina M., Dec. 30, 1861; Ignatius, June 2, 1863; Minna, June 10, 1865, died May 3, 1876; Franklin J., Nov. 18, 1837 - all living at home.

  DANIEL W. SEITZ - school teacher, is a son of David and Lydia (Hufford) Seitz, and was born in this county Sept. 16, 1850.  He is a graduate of the commercial department of the National Normal College of Lebanon, Ohio.  He and Florence, daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Dinsmore) Crawford, whose birthplace is Cincinnati, were married in this county Oct. 15, 1874.  His grandfather, Daniel Seitz, was in the war of 1812.

  JOHN SEITZ - engaged in farming and stock raising, is a son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Hite) Seitz, was born in Fairfield county, Ohio, Apr. 19, 1827.  His wife, Sarah, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Gander) Clevenger, was born in this county Apr. 8, 1835.  Her parents came to the county in 1830.  They were arrived in this county Feb. 3, 1853, and have had three children: Susannah, born Dec. 29, 1854, residing in this county; Albert, Apr. 14, 1857; Samuel D., Nov. 2, 1864, deceased.  His father, Daniel Seitz, was in the war of 1812, and his brother, Noah Seitz, died in service in the war of the Rebellion.  He has served as township trustee three years.

  PHILEMON B. SEITZ - son of Abraham and Rebecca (Huddle) Seitz, who settled in this county in 1839, was born in Fairfield county June 10, 1827.  He married, Nov. 25, 1852, Mary, daughter of John D. and Anna (Waite) Devinney, and she was also born in Fairfield county, Oct. 3, 1836.  They have had a patriarchal family of twelve, all the living children at home: Calvin P., born May 15, 1854; Charles G., Feb. 10, 1857; Ellen, Aug. 7, 1859; Eliza, born Feb. 10, 1861, died Aug. 13, 1861; John V., born Apr. 30, 1862, died Feb. 4, 1864; Philemon, Sept. 9, 1864; Abraham, Sept. 12, 1866; Anna, Apr. 30, 1870; Mary, May 9, 1872; Royal, July 7, 1874; Gertrude, Mar. 4, 1876; Hortense, July 20, 1878.  Mr. Seitz's grandfather Huddle served through the Revolutionary war.  Mr. Seitz was in the war of 1861-65, Company H, Sixty-sixth O. V. I., and went with Sherman on his famous march to the sea.  His brother, Abraham, died in the service.  Business, farming.

  SAMUEL SEITZ - son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Hite) Seitz, was born in Fairfield county, Ohio, Dec. 14, 1821, and came to this county in 1847, since which he has filled the office of justice of the peace six years and also that of township assessor.  Mary Clevenger, born in this county Dec. 6, 1832, was united in marriage with him Nov. 14, 1850, and four children have been born: Chloe Aug. 27, 1857, resides in Kalida; Belle, Jan. 22, 1861; J. Edson, June 19, 1866; Nancy, Aug. 18, 1870.  Her parents, Samuel and Elizabeth (Gander) Clevenger, settled in this county in 1830.  His brother, Noah Seitz, died in Kentucky, in the service of the war of the Rebellion.  Occupation, farming,

  ADAM SMITH - son of William and Jane (Hanover) Smith, born in Franklin county, July 25, 1840, settled in this county in 1871.  He was first married Mar. 31, 1864, to Mary E. Dildane, who was born in Franklin county, Feb. 9, 1846, and by this marriage had two children, namely:  Emma A., born Mar. 12, 1865, yet at home; Cora M., who lives in Franklin county.  His second marriage was in Licking county, Jan. 7, 1869, to Susan A. McKelvey, who was born in Franklin county, Aug. 4, 1849, daughter of James and Mary A. McKelvey.  Issue of the second marriage:  William, born Oct. 31, 1869; Edward, Jan. 27, 1871; James, Mar. 9, 1872; Lany M., Aug. 19, 1873; George, Feb. 24, 1875; Estella, Mar. 24, 1877; Olive, Sept. 7, 1879.  These are all at home.  James McKelvey served in the Revolutionary war three years, and also in the war of 1812, about eighteen months  The experience of Adam Smith is an illustration of the profit of ditching.  In 1871 he bought a farm at $35 per acre, but it was so wet he could raise little on it.  He put in thirty-two hundred rods of ditching, and now raises eighty-two bushels of corn and twenty-seven bushels of wheat per acre.

  JACKSON SMITH - was born in Franklin county, June 20, 1842, son of William Smith and Jane Hanover.  He was married in Delaware county, Nov. 27, 1864, to Hannah E. Wood, daughter of John and Elisabeth Patrick Wood, and she was born in Franklin county Nov. 7, 1816.  They have six children: Oliver L., born May 13, 1866; Flora M., Jan. 12, 1868; Charles P., Aug. 2, 1870; Hattie E., Aug. 2, 1872; Maggie A., Apr. 7, 1874; Lulu M., Oct. 31, 1876.  Mr. Smith is at present a trustee of Pleasant township.  He was called out to serve his country during the Morgan raid.  Business, farming.

  JAMES H. SMITH - son of James H. and Martha (Davis) Smith, was born in Knox county, Ohio, Aug. 28, 1818, and removed to this county, in 1842.  His wife, Harriet, daughter of Samuel and Mary (Todd) Todd, who came to this county from Seneca county, Ohio, in 1834, was born in Fairfield county, Ohio.  They were married in this county, April, 1844, and have six children: Lafayette N., born Oct. 14, 1839, residing in Toledo; Maria L., Aug. 14, 1852; Kossuth, Mar. 13, 1855; Julia R., May 15, 1858; Jeff. D., Dec. 12, 1862; Annie C., Oct. 11, 1868 - all in Ottawa.  He was land appraiser for Liberty, Ottawa and Pleasant townships in 1853; auditor of the county from 1857 to 1861, and county commissioner since 1878.  His grandfather, Davis, served in the war of the Revolution, and his father was in the war of 1812, under General Harrison.  Occupation farmer.

  JOHN SMITH - son of Nimrod and Mary (Saner) Smith, was born in Stark county, Nov. 19, 1826, and settled in this county in 1859.  He married his first wife, Mary J. Boylan, June 14, 1849, and two children were born to them: William W. Apr. 5, 1850; and Maroa J. (Blair); the former resides at Leipsic, Ohio; the latter in Henry county, Iowa.  Mrs. Smith died Aug. 28, 1851.  May 25, 1854, he married, in this county, Susan Farver, daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Harris) Farver; seven children were the result of this union; Mary E. (Hoskinson), born Mar. 5, 1855; Eugene F., Feb. 28, 1857, died Apr. 6, 1877; Clarissa A., Dec. 5, 1858, died Feb. 26, 1873; Benjamin M., Mar. 27, 1862, died Sept. 25, 1863; Nordyce A., Mar. 13, 1864, died Mar. 31, 1877; Cora May, Jan. 12, 1867; and Burten S., Jan. 16, 1870, died Mar. 29, 1877; the living are at home.   His brothers, Lewis, George, Jacob,  and Nimrod were in the war of the Rebellion, 1861-5.  Nimrod died at Camp Beverly.  Business, farming.

  JOHN SMITH - son of Johnson and Elisabeth Reeder Smith, was born in Alleghany county, Pennsylvania, Aug. 1, 1815, and settled in Putnam county in 1850.  He married in Licking county, Aug. 31, 1837, Elisabeth Glancy, born in Knox county July 23, 1821, daughter or D. M. an Elisabeth (Otto) Glancy.  Children: Eliza A., born Aug. 21, 1838; William H., Feb. 22, 1840; David M., Dec. 9, 1841; Asbury Dec. 22, 1843; Johnson M., July 22, 1846; Lucy, Aug. 9, 1848; Margaret, Oct. 24, 1850; Josiah, April 1853; Mary, Aug. 22, 1855; Nelson, born Nov. 5, 1858, died Sept. 15, 1859; Emma, Oct. 11, 1860; Glancy B., Nov. 6, 1862; Albert M., Mar. 13, 1865.  Of these, Eliza A. and Asbury reside in Illinois, and David M. in Kansas; all the others live in Putnam county.  Mr. Smith has held the office of trustee in Pleasant township for three years.  William H. and one other son were in the war of the Rebellion.  Occupation, farming.

  WILLIAM H. SMITH - farmer, born in Licking county, Feb. 22, 1840, settled in this county in 1850 with his parents, John Smith, and Elisabeth Glancey.  His wife, Hannah E., daughter of James and Lydia Hayden Sims, who came here in 1841, was born in Allen county Apr. 11, 1844.  They were married in Putnam county Oct. 31, 1867.  Children: Frank E., born May 31, 1868; John J., Mar. 17, 1869; Willie, born Dec. 13, 1873, died Nov. 13, 1876; Brice, Dec. 7, 1876; Anna J., July 8, 1878.  Mr. Smith served in the Union army in the late war, in Eighty-seventh O. V. I., and was captured and paroled at Harper's Ferry.  His brother, D. M. Smith, served in the same regiment; both three years.  Business farming.

  WILLIAM W. SMITH - was born in Hancock county, Ohio, Apr. 5, 1850, and is a son of John and Mary J. (Baylon) Smith.  He is a printer, and is the present editor and proprietor of the Leipsic Free Press.  He came to this county in 1860.  His wife, Viola A., daughter of Abram and Jane (Boak) Baughman, who settled in the county in 1835, was born Nov. 30, 1858.  They were married Aug. 27, 1874, and have one child, Clyde Leroy born Aug. 31, 1878.

  WALLACE SOHLKE - whose parents, Christian and Emily (Geppinger) Sohlke, came to this county in 1870, was born in Chenango county, New York, Oct. 27, 1855, and is located at North Creek, Putnam county, Ohio, in the family grocery business, his store being the second one of the kind in the place
